Immunology - the study of how we resist infections or toxins.
Pretty important, right?
Bacteriology - the study of bacteria - which are responsible for many illnesses AND (different bacteria!) for many healthy processes.
Also hugely important!
Born on this date in 1903, Ruth Ella Moore was a bacteriologist who published works on a terrible disease called tuberculosis, on dental cavities, on the effects that antibiotics have on the microorganisms we count on in our digestive systems, and on blood types of African Americans.
She was a professor, and the head of the Department of Bacteriology at Howard University.
And before she achieved all of that, she became at age 30 the first African American woman to earn a PhD in the natural sciences.
Waaaaay cool.
Check out these resources about immunology.
