July 10 - Happy Birthday, Nikola Tesla

Just a few days before I wrote this post - more than a decade ago - I was visiting the Niagara Falls in New York. I was marveling at the power of the Niagara Falls, I was busy feeling the spray and mist, hearing the thunder of millions of gallons of water falling 60 to 180 feet and pulverizing the rocks below, and seeing the green-blue water froth white with speed and impact. If you ever get a chance to see Niagara Falls, go for it!

As I walked away from the falls, I saw a large statue of a man perched on a stool, reading or studying a plan or something. I ran to see who the statue depicted—and I was startled to see it was scientist and inventor Nikola Tesla!

What is a statue of this man, who was an ethnic Serb, born on this day in 1856 in the Austrian Empire, which became Yugoslavia and is now Croatia—what is a statue of Nikola Tesla doing here in Niagara Falls, New York, USA?

Apparently Tesla came to the U.S. in 1884. He built the first hydro-electric plant in Niagara Falls, and (according to the Tesla Memorial Society of NY), this was the “final victory of Tesla's Alternating Current over [Thomas] Edison's Direct Current.” At one time, the Niagara Falls power plant was the largest in the world.



By the way, the Canadian side of Niagara Falls has a statue of Tesla, too. Rather than looking academic, this statue depicts Tesla in quite a dashing pose, holding onto his top hat and flourishing his cane. There are plaques and other memorials in the area devoted to Tesla, as well!

I do love to see a memorial created to a scientist rather than a warrior!


December 20 - Electricity Theme Day

Here I am updating my post for 12/20/2009:

On this day in 1879, Thomas Edison privately demonstrated his incandescent light bulb at his Menlo Park research lab.


Remember, Edison didn't invent or even discover electricity (known from ancient 
times), and he didn't invent the first light bulb (Sir Humphrey Davy made an arc lamp in 1809, and Frederick de Moleyns got the first patent for an incandescent bulb in 1841). What Edison did was to make the first commercially practical light bulb and an entire system of electric lighting. Edison said on the last day of 1879, "We will make electricity so cheap that only the rich will burn candles."

On this day in 1880
, the famous street called Broadway in Manhattan, NYC, became one of the fi
rst streets in the U.S. lit by electricity. A mile of the street was lit by carbon-based Brush arc lamps, which provided much brighter light than the incandescent light bulbs of the time. Since then, that section of Broadway, which features the Theatre District and Times Square, has become known as “The Great White Way” because it is lit by millions of lights on marquees and billboards.

On this day in 1901, Robert J. Van de Graaf was born. This American physicist invented a high-voltage electrostatic generator, which looks like a large silver ball mounted on a pedestal. It makes your hair stand on end, but more importantly, it can be used as a particle accelerator in physics research.

On this day in 1938, Russian-American inventor Vladimir Zworykin (sometimes called the “true father of television,” although most give Philo Farnsworth that honor) was finally granted a patent for his iconoscope, an early television camera. (This camera had already been used for the historic TV transmission of the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin.)



On this day in 1951, the first electricity ever generated by nuclear energy was created near Arco, Idaho. (The Experimental Breeder Reactor in Idaho produced enough energy to light four 200-watt light bulbs that day.)

By 1952, the Paley Commission was already somewhat pessimistic about nuclear power and called for “aggressive research in the whole field of solar energy.” And by 1955, the Arco Reactor was the first reactor in the U.S. to experience partial meltdown.

June 15 - "Aha! Lightning IS Electricity!"

There is this famous story about Benjamin Franklin going out into an electrical storm with a flag and a key - and doing the experiment that proved that lightning is electricity. The traditional date given for this story is June 15, 1752, but on the "On this day in history" and other websites I saw oodles of other nearby dates in June of 1752 associated with this experiment. Apparently we just don't know for sure the exact date.

The thing is, Franklin (whose formal education stopped at age 10) was very interested in electricity and had done lots of experiments. He suspected that lightning was electricity and had devised a plan to test the hypothesis (which is a kind of educated guess). He had already gotten all the materials he would need to safely run his experiment:

a kite made out of a silk handkerchief

a hemp string, a silk string, and a length of wire

a house key




The wire was a sort of lightning rod that was attached to the top of the kite. The string attached to the kite was made out of hemp, and when it was wet it would conduct electricity easily. The idea was for Franklin to stand in the doorway of a shed, holding a silk string that was attached to the hemp string - the silk string would stay dry and so would not conduct electricity.

Of course, not just the silk string was attached to the hemp kite string, but a metal key was as well.

After readying the apparatus, Franklin waited for a thunderstorm. At his first opportunity, he and his son walked with all the materials into a field where there was a shed.

Franklin's son ran to get the kite aloft, and Franklin waited in the shed's doorway. He waited and waited, but nothing seemed to happen. 


Then Franklin notice that loose threads of the hemp string were standing up - a sure sign of static electricity. 

Remember, Franklin had studied electricity and knew what to look for. After seeing the hemp-string threads getting charged, he moved his finger near the key and felt a small jolt. He waited a bit and then moved his knuckle close to the key and saw a larger electrical spark jump from the key to his knuckle. (Of course, he felt that jolt even more!)

Awesome! Franklin had proved that the lightning we can see in the sky IS the same phenomenon we call electricity. He was able to store a lot of charge in his Leyden jar before he and his son returned home victorious.

Note that the kite-with-a-lightning-rod was picking up electrical charge just by flying high during a lightning storm. If his kite had actually been hit by lightning, Franklin might have been electrocuted! And if he died that day, who knows how that might have changed American history!

By the way, this story seems almost as if it would be "just a story" instead of reality. But it is true. However, some people report on the experiment using incorrect statements such as "Benjamin Franklin discovered electricity" - even though even ancient peoples knew about electricity. Also, some illustrations of the experiment are incorrect. Can you see the problem with each picture? (Answers below.)
