August 2 – National Water Balloon Day

During a long, hot summer, people want a chance to cool off by getting wet. An hour or two at the pool, lake, or beach? Awesome. A shower at night? Great. But...what about all those hours in between?

How about playing catch with water balloons? 


It's really more like playing SPLASH with water balloons - and sometimes playing with water balloons is more like summer's version of a snowball fight!



Water balloons are smaller than most regular balloons, and they are made of thinner material. Those two things make them more fun, more pop-able. So, although you CAN fill up normal party balloons with water, it's best to use dedicated water balloons especially if you are more into pelting one another rather than playing catch.

By the way, because water balloons are small and thin, they can be a challenge to fill! Here's a quick guide.

August 17 – Extraordinary Journeys Day

The first spacecraft to transmit data from the surface of another planet - extraordinary!

The first ship to reach the North Pole - hard to do, because this was back when it was covered with ice!

The first balloon to cross the Atlantic Ocean. Would you want to cross an entire ocean - with a balloon??

On this date in 1970, Venera 7 was launched by the Soviet Union, heading toward Venus. It later became the first
spacecraft to land on another planet AND the first spacecraft to transmit data from another planet's surface.

This was not without problems. By design, the lander remained attached to the interplanetary bus as long as possible so that the bus could cool the lander during the journey through Venus's thick atmosphere. When the lander ejected and opened its parachute, the parachute apparently failed. The lander ended up falling to the surface much quicker than planned - and therefore it hit the surface much harder than planned. 

The moment of impact, the spacecraft seemed to go silent. But, luckily, the recording tapes here on Earth still turned...just in case...A few weeks later, scientists reviewing the tapes discovered that there was a very weak signal, after all. The best guess is that the lander had bounced onto its side and left the antennae at the wrong angle to send a strong signal back to Earth.

Still, the weak signal told us that the lander had survived. And that the temperature on the surface of Venus was 475 degrees Celsius - that's 887 degrees Fahrenheit! - and THAT meant that there could be no liquid water on Venus, and that humans couldn't survive there.

Another big Soviet coup happened on this date in 1977, when the nuclear-powered icebreaker Arktika became the first surface ship to reach the North Pole.

The last extraordinary journey was completed on this date in 1978. This time, it was Americans daring to dare: three men piloted their balloon Double Eagle II from Maine to France. This first-ever balloon crossing of the Atlantic Ocean took a bit more than 137 hours!





The day before, on August 16, the men had had to give up their plans of hang gliding during the last bit of descent, because they had to drop the hang glider as ballast! Later, they crossed the Irish coast - and that right there made them the first to successfully cross the ocean in a balloon, even though they hadn't yet successfully landed! People at the Shannon Airport alerted the Double Eagle crew that they'd been spotted, but the balloonists continued on to France. 

Once there, authorities closed LeBourget Airfield so that the balloon could safely land there, and they radioed the crew with that offer. And that was a really nice offer - that's the place where Charles Lindbergh landed after his first solo transatlantic flight! But the balloon pilots knew that trying to make it all the way to that historic airfield would put them and others on the ground in danger. They were running out of ballast; they played it safe and landed in a field of barley near Miserey, rather than trying to make it to Paris.








August 18 – Celebrate the Discovery of Helium!

On this date in 1868, French astronomer Pierre Janssen discovered helium.

It was the first time that a chemical element had been discovered somewhere else in the universe before it was discovered here on Earth. Helium was discovered in the Sun's spectrum, and so it is named after the Greek sun god, Helios.

During an eclipse on this date in 1868, Janssen used a spectroscope and observed bright lines in the spectrum of the Sun's chromosphere (which is the middle layer of the three main layers in the Sun's atmosphere). Those bright lines showed that the chromosphere was gas, Janssen said. There was a bright yellow line that didn't correspond to any known element (and of course, this was the helium line), but Janssen didn't actually write about that. Instead, he realized that the Sun's chromospheric spectrum could be observed even without an eclipse, and THAT innovation is what he spent his time and effort on.

Later that same year, Joseph Lockyer of England set up a spectroscope to do what Janssen had pointed out could be done – to observe the Sun's chromosphere without waiting for an eclipse. And it was he who commented on that bright yellow line, and it was he and a chemist named Edward Frankland who named the element.


Meet Helium

Helium is the second lightest element in the universe, with an atomic number of 2.

Only hydrogen (atomic number 1) is lighter.

Helium is also the second most common element in the universe. (Again, hydrogen is the most common.)

Hydrogen is colorless, odorless, tasteless, non-toxic, inert. It is a noble gas. Inert and noble gas basically mean the same thing – helium doesn't react with other elements. That's because it's outer shell of electrons is full up – it doesn't have an extra electron or two it wants to get rid of, and it's not lacking an electron or two to make a full shell. It's “just right,” just as it is!



  • Have you ever tried talking on helium? The gas is so light that our voices get  much higher. Take a listen to one, two, or three videos!
IMPORTANT NOTE: Because helium is inert, it doesn't react with our bodies, so it is pretty safe to "talk on helium" once in a very long while BUT there are three big "buts."

1. Be sure to take some regular breaths in between so you are getting plenty of oxygen!

2. It can be quite dangerous to breathe straight from the tank. Be sure to put helium in a balloon, and then breathe it in from the balloon. Again, do NOT breathe straight from the tank.

3. Hold onto the balloon! Don't suck in the thin rubber along with the helium!

Because of these three safety reasons, it's important that little kids not try this trick, and that older kids do it with adult supervision.
