June 19 - Juneteenth

This is an update of my post published on June 19, 2010:


Juneteenth is sometimes called Freedom Day or Emancipation Day. This holiday honors African American heritage, and it commemorates the announcement of the abolition of slavery in Texas on June 19, 1865. 

When I first wrote about Juneteenth, in 2010, 36 states celebrated it as a state holiday. Now it is a federal holiday!



By the way, the term Juneteenth is an example of a portmanteau, which is a combination of two words, in this case June and nineteenth, to create a new word.

The words brunch and smog are two more examples of portmanteaus. Do you know what words they combine?


ANSWER: Brunch is a combination of the words breakfast and lunchSmog is a mash-up of smoke and fog.

Happy Birthday, Lou Gehrig

Born on this day in 1903, in New York City, Gehrig was an awkward athlete as a youth. However, he worked hard and constantly practiced baseball—and he became a star! From 1925 to 1939, Gehrig played in every single Yankee game, which was a record 2,130 games in a row.

Unfortunately, Gehrig came down with a rare disease that forced him to retire and that took his life just two years later. That disease is amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also called ALS—and sometimes called Lou Gehrig's disease. One of the best known recent folks with ALS is the famous physicist Stephen Hawking, who died at age 76 after living with ALS more than 50 years!!

March 7 - Evolution of Games Day

Over the years, games and sports have changed and multiplied. It's really hard to say when most games or sports began – because when, for example, did baseball become baseball? All the earlier or similar games—cricket and rounders, town ball and softball, the New York Game—had some but not all of the features of today's baseball.

For example, the reason we call the person who throws the ball to the batter a pitcher is because pitching underhand, like pitching a horseshoe, was mandatory – and throwing (overhand) was illegal! Yes, that's right, according to the Knickerbocker rules written by Alexander Cartwright in 1845 (arguably the first version of true baseb
all), “The ball must be pitched, not thrown, for the bat.”

Those rules also specified that a game consisted of 21 counts, or a
ces, but that there had to be an equal number of hands.

What?

Counts? Aces? Hands?


Are we suddenly talking about a card game here?


Well, the terms for the game grew out of card game vocabulary. A h
and meant a team's turn at bat. Back in the early days of baseball, there were no such thing as innings, and the team at bat would change with every “out.” A trip around all four bases was called an ace, and the winning team was the first team to bring 21 players home. A game could have gone like this:

Team A is up. First batter is out.
Team B is up. In just 30 minutes, 21 batters make hits and score.

Game over.

But, then again, a game could go on and on and on. What if each team kept getting the other team out? What if the teams got stuck at 5 to 8, and it seemed like neither team was EVER going to get to 21?

On this date in 1857
, the group that later became the National Association of Base Ball Players met and decided on some new rules. One of these rules was that a game would consist of 9 innings (each inning consisting of both teams having their turn at bat until such time that 3 “outs” are made) unless special circumstances such as a tie score or bad weather should lengthen or shorten a game.


Now for our other game...
Monopoly!

On this date in 1933
, Charles Darrow is said to have created and trademarked the game of Monopoly. This real-estate game modeled on the resort 
Atlantic City (New Jersey) featured most of the familiar aspects of the game mass marketed by Parker Brothers from 1935 on.

It immediately became the best selling game in America and quickly became the best-selling game in the world, now sold in over 100 countries and 37 languages (German version shown). The official Hasbro website claims that more than 5 BILLION little green houses have been “built” since 1935.

However, the story that Charles Darrow, while out of work in Germantown, Pennsylvania, during the Great Depression, thought up this game and fiddled around with board layouts and rules while playing with his family and friends—that story is just plain wrong.

The real history of the creation and evolution of the game is complicated. In 1903 a wo
man named Elizabeth Magie created a game called “The Landlords Game.”  


Magie's game featured four corners: Mother Earth Collect $100, Gaol (an old word for jail), Public Park, and Go To Gaol. There were four railroads, one per side of the board, and the rest of the spaces were properties to be purchased or fines to be paid. Magie was granted a patent for her game in 1904, and her game sold fairly well in the northeast. When her patent expired, Magie made some changes and two versions of rules and received a new patent in 1924. One version remained “The Landlords Game,” and the second set of rules (played on the same board) was named “Prosperity”; the rules of the latter game were very similar to Monopoly's rules.


The game grew in popularity and began to be called “Auction Monopoly” or just “Monopoly.” During this time game boards were made by hand, and many people customized theirs with the local names of properties. Different versions of rules were also created and even copyrighted. One man, Dan Layman, sold his version of Auction Monopoly to Electronic Laboratories (in Indiana). He renamed this game “Finance” because his lawyers said that “Monopoly” was in the public domain and could not be protected. This version was the first to be mass-produced.


Another man, Louis Thun, wanted to get a patent on his version of Monopoly, but his lawyers did a patent search and found Elizabeth Magie's 1904 patent. The lawyers advised Thun not to try for a patent, saying, “Patents are for inventors and you didn't invent it.”


I read that a group of people living in Atlantic City made some customizations of their game, which they called “Monopoly,” including naming all the streets after their town. It was there that Darrow first met the game when he was invited to Charles Todd's house for Monopoly night. Darrow asked for a copy of the rules, which Todd's secretary typed up for him; Darrow reportedly never spoke to Todd again.


Charles Darrow did make a few minor changes to the rules, and he made some additions to the board, including the familiar color-coding stripes and the cartoons. There might have been something about him that enabled Darrow to take a well-received game and make it into a monster hit...but Charles Darrow definitely did not invent the game!


Charles Darrow became rich from the game of Monopoly, and the company Parker Brothers of course profited as well. Lest you think that Elizabeth Magie didn't receive any compensation from her invention (aside from the moderate sales she herself made), Parker Brothers did pay her $500 for the rights to The Landlords Game and manufactured it under its original title, with the original rules; the company manufactured a few hundred sets and then stopped. Parker Brothers bought all the games Louis Thun had produced, for $50 per game, and the company also bought rights to the game Finance for $10,000. Another game that had evolved from The Landlords Game was called “Inflation.” When Parker Brothers sued the makers of Inflation for patent infringement, there was a countersuit; Parker Brothers settled with that company for another $10,000.


Kind of makes you want to go play with lots and lots of play money, doesn't it?





Did you know...?

Neiman Marcus sold a Monopoly game entirely made out of chocolate. Everything from board, game pieces, to money could be eaten. (But it cost $600, so...)

In the 1970's, a Braille edition of Monopoly was produced for the first time.

A Monopoly game created by Alfred Dunhill included gold and silver houses and hotels and sold for $25,000.

February 5 - Measurements and Records Day

This is a fine day to think about all sorts of measurements and records. Don't get hung up thinking measurement is all about how many cups in a quart, or how many kilometers equals 10 miles...As for records, it's not just “longest river” and “tallest man.” Here are a few of the measurement- and record-related events that occurred today:

February 5, 1897 – Measurement of circles (almost) imperiled by lawmakers! The Indiana state house unanimously passed a law decreeing that the value of pi (the ratio of a circle's circumference to its diameter) is exactly 3.2. Since pi is actually an irrational number (a decimal that doesn't end or repeat) that starts with the digits 3.141592 but then goes on and on, the value mandated by this law wasn't even terribly close. And the fact that this law was passed in the 1800s isn't any kind of excuse; a much better estimate of the value of pi has been known since ancient times. The bill never became law, luckily, because a Purdue University professor happened to be in town and coached some Indiana senators about the math involved. The bill was postponed indefinitely in the senate. 

The entire idea of legislating scientific or mathematical truth is what was really out of whack here!

February 5, 1901 – Patent for an ellipse-shaped looping roller coaster (called “centrifugal railway”) awarded to Edwin Prescott. 


Called “Loop the Loop,” this roller coaster was not the first with vertical loop, but it was the first with the ellipse shape, and therefore it was more comfortable and safer to ride. (The first two coasters with vertical loops—of the circular variety—were shut down due to accidents and injuries.) We can count this as a great success in roller coaster history! 

Unfortunately, more people wanted to watch it than to ride it, so much so that a viewing area was built and people were charged admission just to watch. Even with the viewing fees, Loop the Loop didn't make enough money to keep running, and it went bankrupt around the time of World War I. 

That had to be a record for the most unsuccessful successful roller coaster!

February 5, 1915 – Richard Hofstadter born in New York City. Hofstadter went on to become a physicist; he won a Nobel prize for his work, which included “measuring” the sizes of the neutron and proton in the nuclei of atoms. Of course, these particles are really, really small.

Like REALLY small! Imagine taking one and a half yardsticks or meter sticks. Then cut the sticks into 1,000,000,000,000,000 pieces. That's one quadrillion (also known as one thousand million million) pieces. That's...well, pretty d
arned small!




February 5, 1934 – Hank Aaron was born in Mobile, Alabama. Aaron grew up to be one of the greatest baseball players of all time. He played from 1954 to 1976, and he held the Major League Baseball (MLB) record for most career home runs, with 755 homers, for 33 years. 

Even now that his record has been broken by Barry Bonds, I have noticed that Bonds' alleged steroid use has prevented him from being elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame, and I assume has tainted the record at least for some. 

Aaron still holds other records because of his high-level consistency over the years: he shares the record of hitting 30 or more homers in a season, for 15 seasons; he is in a tie for most All-Star games with 24; he has the most career runs batted in (2,297); he has the most career extra base hits (1,477); and he has the most career total bases (6,856). He's near the top in lots more statistical categories: he's third in career hits (3,771); he's tied for fourth (with Babe Ruth) in with career runs (2,174); he's second in at-bats (12,364); he's third in games played (3,298). 

Pant, pant! There are an awful lot of numbers in baseball—and these don't even involve averaging!


Measuring Everything in the Universe

New Grounds has an interesting “interactive diagram” about the size of things. When you first enter, you can see the size of things at a human scale, such as an adult human (1.7) meters, giant earthworm (an amazing 7 meters!), and a large beach ball (1 meter). Slide the little slider button to the right, and you can see huger and huger objects, including planets, starts, and galaxies. Slide the button to the left, and you can see tinier and tinier objects—going down to atoms, protons, and even to the as-yet undetected “strings” that may make up quarks.




It's Rational to Like Irrational Numbers
There are some pretty fun books about numbers. Have you read Math Curse, by Jon Scieszka? How Much is a Million? by David M. Schwartz and Steven Kellogg?

For older readers, how about A Gebra Named Al, by Wendy Isdell? I haven't read it, but Sir Cumference and the Dragon of Pi, by Cindy Neuschwander, sounds really fun! (This author has a whole slew of math storybooks!)
