June 25 - A New Species??? Captured!!!

It is very rare that a new mammal of a medium-to-large size is discovered. The Okapi was discovered by Europeans for the first time in 1910...

...But since then there had been no additional discoveries of large-scale mammals until skulls with unusual horns turned up in Vietnam in 1992.

The previously unknown creature was called (variously) the Vu Quang ox, spindlehorn, Asian unicorn, siola, or (most commonly) saola. The Hmong people call it saht-supahp, "the polite animal." It is a sort of antelope.



The search for live specimens of saola took two years. On this date in 1994, the London Times announced that a live specimen had finally been captured. 

Since then, a "camera trap" finally captured a photo of a living saola in the wild (in 1999), and conservationists in Vietnam have started working hard to protect this critically endangered species.



When I first wrote about the saola, in 2010, scientists only knew of 11 individuals alive in captivity or the wild. Now scientists know of about 750 living in the wild (and of course a few more living in captivity).

Is it a pansy or a petunia? A rose or a rhododendron?

And which flowering plants are closely related to one another?

As long as people have been people, they knew a lot about plants. They closely studied the leaves and flowers, cones and barks, roots and fruits of plants, and they discovered the food and medicine value of the various parts of plants. People passed on this knowledge to younger generations verbally and, once writing was invented, through written texts.

Centuries ago, scientists began to codify this “folk knowledge” that had been passed on from parents to children to grandchildren. They began to categorize things more exactly, and they began to name things scientifically. I'm sure you get that the same plant has different names in different languages: a rose may be warda, roz, roos, bunga mawar, gul, or ruusu, depending on where you live and what language you speak – but it will still, as Shakespeare pointed out, smell as sweet. But once scientists gave the rose one scientific name (in this case genus Rosa), everyone could communicate more easily. (Specific types of roses have different species names: Rosa majalis, Rosa moschata, Rosa woodsii, and so on.)

Today's famous birthday contributed to those early attempts to categorize and name plants. Augustus Quirinus Rivinus, also called Augustus Bachmann, was born in Germany on this date in 1652. He became a doctor of medicine, and he also studied botany and astronomy. He became a professor of pathology (the study of disease), physiology (the study of living systems), and botany (the study of plants). He was put in charge of his university's medical garden.

It was Rivinus who first consistently used genus and species names, such as the scientific rose names discussed above. Carl Linnaeus got credit for the naming scheme we currently use for organisms, and Linnaeus used several of Rivinus's innovations.

Another thing that Rivinus promoted through his use was the dichotomous key. This sort of key is useful for people to determine the identity of an animal, plant, or other organism. There are a series of steps with just two choices; when the user makes her choice, she branches to another question with two choices. This process goes on and on until she arrives at the name of the organism she is trying to identify.

May 22, 2012 - International Day for Biological Diversity




What is “biological diversity”? And why should we care about it?

Well, it means the rich variety of animals, plants, and other living things. We humans have described about 1.4 million species of living things. That sounds like a lot, doesn't it? But there are probably many, many more kinds of species that we haven't yet discovered or identified. Experts guess that there might be ten million species altogether...

But that's just a guess.

How could there be so many different critters? Well, in one study, 19 trees in Panama were “fogged” with insecticide, and of course dead insects fell like rain. The insects were carefully collected and studied, and it turned out that there were nearly 1,200 species of beetles alone! Also, 80% of those beetles had been unknown to science before that time. Heck, many of the beetles live their whole lives on just one tree—and that particular species is unknown anywhere else, even on the next tree over!

More than a thousand beetles in 19 trees in Panama! And that's aside from all the other insects, spiders, and other arthropods; all the birds, mammals, amphibians, reptiles, mollusks, and other animals. And all the flowers, ferns, mosses, and other plants; all the mushrooms and other fungi; and all the amoebas and bacteria! And all the other trees in the rainforest, and all the other ecosystems on Earth!

Obviously, not all environments are as rich in biodiversity as a rainforest, and just as obviously, we don't want to wholesale kill everything on the planet just so we can count species! But that Panama study hints that we don't know nearly all of the creatures that we share the Earth with.

Okay, why is biological diversity important?

When we accidentally destroy habitats (by, say, introducing a kind of grass we humans like to walk and play on—but then that grass takes over and native plants die out) or when we purposefully eliminate habitats (by, for example, clearing forest so we can plant crops), we reduce biodiversity. I'm sure you've heard that many creatures such as the African elephant and the giant panda are endangered—but of course there are many much-smaller creatures, less-glamorous plants, and other important but little-known organisms that become endangered or even extinct when habitats are changed or destroyed.

Unfortunately, when we lose a few organisms, we often lose many more—because animals and plants and other living things are linked together in food webs and other kinds of interdependence. That's sad for the creatures, themselves, but it's also sad for humans: When we lose organisms, we may lose food sources. We often lose beauty. We may change the weather in unpredictable and usually uncomfortable ways. We lose potential sources of new medicines and cures.

We lose a lot.
