May 22 – Tectonic Blast! Tectonic Crack!

When we talk about Natural Disasters, we are often talking about terrible weather:

Brutal sandstorms, violent lightning strikes, killer tornadoes, deadly blizzards, destructive hurricanes (or typhoons or  cyclones; all three are basically the same thing).


But there are Natural Disasters that are not weather-related. Instead, they have to do with tectonic forces.

Tectonic forces are those that originate below the Earth's surface as a result of the movement of the continental and undersea plates. The two main disasters in the "tectonic" category are volcanoes and earthquakes.

The Earth's crust is made up of a lot of different
tectonic plates that move around!



Volcanoes

On this date in 1915, Mount Lassen erupted violently, ejecting rock and pumice, ash and gas. The ash and gas formed a column more than 30,000 feet tall - it could be seen from as far away as 150 miles! A large, deep crater formed at the mountain's summit. Only three square miles of nearby region were devastated, but mudflows and pyroclastic flows of hot ash, pumice, and rock reached many more miles.




Don't worry, Mount Lassen's eruption didn't kill people, although it did cause a few minor injuries among people escaping the mudflows. The thing about volcanoes is that they commonly are rocked by earthquakes before they erupt, and they often vent steam or show other signs of being active before they blow big. Lassen woke up on May 30, 1914, after 27,000 years of being dormant, and there were about 400 eruptions between 1914 and 1921, including the one we commemorate today (the biggest eruption of them all).

Because it was the first U.S. volcano to erupt in the 1900s, Lassen Peak's eruptions and activity were very well photographed and studied.

although of course scientists monitor tectonic activity
and earthquakes in case the volcano shows signs
of becoming active once again!
When two plates collide, volcanoes can
form above the collision zone.

Earthquakes

The most powerful earthquake ever recorded occurred in Chile on this date in 1960. It ranged from 9.4 to 9.6 on the "moment magnitude scale" (expressed in the terms we are pretty familiar with from the Richter Scale). 

Unfortunately, the "Great Chilean Earthquake"
and the tsunamis that resulted from the quakes
caused a lot of damage and many deaths.

The earthquake set off tsunamis that did more damage, even, than the original 10-minute-long shake. The tsunamis kicked off waves up to 82 feet tall; a tsunami devastated Hilo, Hawaii, several local tsunamis battered the Chilean coast, and high waves affected faraway spots like the Philippines and Japan!

Like the volcano, this powerful earthquake had some warning - but the warning was an earlier almost-as-powerful earthquake! On May 21, 1960, an 8.1 quake rocked Chile. On May 22, 1960, two more strong earthquakes hit in the same locale as the first; fifteen minutes after the third quake, the monster 9.4 quake hit around 280 miles (460 km) away from the first three.

Smaller aftershocks shook Chile until June 6.

Just as the collisions of tectonic plates
can cause volcanoes, these collisions
can also cause earthquakes.


Tectonic plates cause what has been
called "continental drift" - the slow
changing of the number and position 
of the continents.




October 6 – Remembrance Day in Turkmenistan

What are the people of Turkmenistan remembering today? 

They are flying their flags at half-mast to remember the victims of an earthquake that happened on this date in 1948. 


The 7.3 earthquake was one of the deadliest in human history and devastated the capital city of Ashgabat.

A nation that was once part of the Soviet Union, that is next door to Afghanistan, and that suffers from really high unemployment...you can probably guess that life is not incredibly easy in Turkmenistan. However, the nation has enjoyed recent economic growth because of its large reserves of natural gas. It also has oil resources and grows enough cotton to export some.



Turkmenistan is a bit larger than my native state of California, but it doesn't have quite as much good agricultural land as Cali does—because 80% of the nation is covered by a black-sand desert!

I noticed an “export treemap” diagram (above) in the Wikipedia article about Turkmenistan. It shows how dependent the nation's economy is on just three things (natural gas, oil, and cotton). It would be great if the nation could diversify—which means build many different industries instead of depending on just a few industries. Compare the diagram to the U.S. export treemap below.


Is diversity always good? I was thinking about how wonderful biodiversity is (lots and lots of different creatures in a habitat, instead of just a few), how wonderful cultural and ethnic diversity is (many different types of music and food available, along with many different holidays and traditions)...and of course a nation is much stronger with economic diversity, too.

I can't think of a kind of diversity that's bad...can you?

Happy Birthday, John Milne

Born on this day in 1850, British geologist John Milne invented the first accurate seismograph.

The earth is always shaking, quaking, moving. Any day of the year, type “earthquakes” into Google, and you will see the most recent big quakes that happened that day, or the day before, somewhere in the world. But such a search only shows the big quakes, and there are many more small shakes than large quakes!

As a matter of fact, the earth experiences several million earthquakes a year!

Many of these tremors are so small or so out-of-the-way that they are not recorded, but the US Geological Survey National Earthquake Information Center does locate and record 50 earthquakes worldwide EVERY DAY!

As the USGS website says, there is 100% chance that there will be an earthquake today. Because there are many, every day. 


How do we measure the strength of an earthquake? With a seismograph, an instrument that has a weight that can move relative to the instrument frame but is attached to the frame so that, if there is no motion, it will stay fixed relative to the frame.

The motion of the ground will move the frame, but the weight will not move because of inertia. By measuring the motion between the frame and the weight, the motion of the ground is also measured.

By the way, a modern seismograph is sensitive enough to sense mine explosions, falling trees, or even elk footsteps!

1812 – Earthshaking news in England and the U.S.!

England – Charles Dickens is born!

Happy Birthday to Charles Dickens, author of A Ch
ristmas Carol, David Copperfield, A Tale of Two Cities, Great Expectations, Oliver Twist...(and more).

Dickens was one of the most popular authors of the Victorian
era and remains one of the most popular of all time, whose novels and short stories have never gone out of print. From high school literature classes to popular movies, from animated television shows to Dickens fairs and festivals all over the world, Dickens's work has appeared over and over again.

Did you know...?


Some historians credit Dickens with inventing Christmas. What they mean, of course, is that Dickens and his works reinvented Christmas, and he, along with a few other trendsetters, helped solidify a certain look and feel that still resonates with many modern people.

Before Dickens, Christmas in English-speaking countries was nothing like the holiday it is today. For many, it was a large family feast and not much more, and
some Protestants were suspicious of any Christmas celebration at all.

During the Victorian era, however, Prince Albert and Queen Victoria brought the German tradition of decorated Christmas trees to England; soon small presents hanging on the tree became larger presents under the tree.

Dickens wrote about Christmas in several works, most notably A Christmas Carol, and his take-away message was that Christmas is a time of generosity. Gift-giving to loved ones, charity to the less fortunate in the community, and a cheerful spendthrift spirit—we can put all of that down to the anti-bah-humbug spirit Dickens promoted. Furtherm
ore, Christmas as a time of a well-stoked fire, a parlor crowded with merry family members, being cozy while snow falls outside—all of these, too, are laid at Dickens's door by some.













The U.S. – Earthquake
s cause a river to flow “upstream”!

On the same day as Dickens's birth, a severe earthquake rocked New Madrid, Missouri, in the U.S. The quake set off what is known as a fluvial tsunami, which caused the Mississippi River to “run backward,” away from the Gulf of Mexico, northward toward Iowa, for several hours.


A tsunami is a very large ocean wave caused by an earthquake or a volcan
ic eruption. The word fluvial means “relating to a river,” so of course a fluvial tsunami refers to a large river wave caused by an earthquake.

The earthquake that reversed the flow of the mighty Mississippi (for a few hours) is estimated to be one of the most powerful in human history, with a Richter scale reading, scientists believe, of approximately 8.8. (Actually, that area of Missouri had been shaken up by many huge earthquakes, one after another—starting with an 8.6 quake on December 16, 1811, continuing with an 8.4 earthquake in January, 1812, and continuing on with aftershocks for a few years!)

Luckily, the area was sparsely populated, and most buildings were only one story high. In all the earthquakes, about 1,000 people died—which is very sad, but in another time or place, the death toll could have been much higher, as we sadly know from Haiti's much less powerful 7.0 quake last month.

Help for Earthquake Victims


The Red Cross cannot ship donated items such as blankets and canned goods to Haiti. Instead, they have been asking people for cash donations. Adult participation in blood drives is always welcome, too.


One way to raise money for donations is to have an information fair. For example, you could hold an earthquake preparedness and awareness fair, charging a small amount for participation, with all proceeds going to Haitian relief. Ask local businesses to donate drinks and snacks to be sold for fifty cents or a dollar per item. Have some teachers and nurses donate their time to speak or run an activity. Hold an earthquake jeopardy trivia game.
