November 23 - Dinosaur-Era Fossils Found in Antarctica

Antarctica is continent covered by ice about a mile thick. Despite the fact that the oceans surrounding the continent team with life—penguins and seals, giant squid and whales, its frozen interior lands are almost lifeless.


But it wasn't always so!

On this day in 1969, a team of paleontologists discovered the fossilized bones of Lystrosaurus, a therapsid reptile (these are the ancestors of modern mammals) that lived 200 million years ago. It was a creature that lived in warm climates.



Whaaat?

Remains of Lystrosaurus had earlier been found in southern Africa and Asia, so the new finding of Antarctic dinosaurs proved that the three continents had once been joined in a super-continent we call Gondwana. The portion of this supercontinent that is now Antarctica was located straddling the equator, which explains its mild temperatures, but when Godwanna broke up millions of years ago, and the various chunks of land drifted about, Antarctica drifted to the polar location we see today.


Before there was Gondwana - plus another supercontinent called Laurasia - 
there was Pangea, one huge all-the-world's-lands-in-one-super-continent. 



The theory that continents have drift around on the surface of the Earth is called, naturally, continental drift. Alfred Wegner first proposed continental drift in 1912, and most scientists were skeptical of the idea. However, evidence from the geographical shape and geological content of the continents, tectonic forces in the Atlantic Ocean (which even today is getting measurably wider as the ocean-floor plates pull away from each other), plants and animals, and fossil remains, data on the flip-flop of the planet's magnetic poles—all of that evidence has shown Wegner's idea to be correct. Also, geologists have come up with a mechanism to explain how continents can move around: plate tectonics.

Way back in the 1700s, Benjamin Franklin noticed that Africa and South America seem to fit together like jigsaw puzzle pieces, and he suggested that they were once connected. Of course, unlike Wegner, Franklin did not collect comparative data to try to prove the point.

The Earth's magnetic field has “flip-flopped” many times in the past, with North becoming South and vice versa. This field reversal doesn't happen overnight, but instead takes thousands of years. And it may be that it is about to flip soon! Apparently the North-South switcheroo happens once every 250,000 years, give or take a few hundred years—but it has been 750,000 years since the last pole reversal! We are loooong overdue! Also, right now Earth's magnetic field is lessening year after year—and it is believed that this is a first sign of an oncoming magnetic field flip.

May 22 – Tectonic Blast! Tectonic Crack!

When we talk about Natural Disasters, we are often talking about terrible weather:

Brutal sandstorms, violent lightning strikes, killer tornadoes, deadly blizzards, destructive hurricanes (or typhoons or  cyclones; all three are basically the same thing).


But there are Natural Disasters that are not weather-related. Instead, they have to do with tectonic forces.

Tectonic forces are those that originate below the Earth's surface as a result of the movement of the continental and undersea plates. The two main disasters in the "tectonic" category are volcanoes and earthquakes.

The Earth's crust is made up of a lot of different
tectonic plates that move around!



Volcanoes

On this date in 1915, Mount Lassen erupted violently, ejecting rock and pumice, ash and gas. The ash and gas formed a column more than 30,000 feet tall - it could be seen from as far away as 150 miles! A large, deep crater formed at the mountain's summit. Only three square miles of nearby region were devastated, but mudflows and pyroclastic flows of hot ash, pumice, and rock reached many more miles.




Don't worry, Mount Lassen's eruption didn't kill people, although it did cause a few minor injuries among people escaping the mudflows. The thing about volcanoes is that they commonly are rocked by earthquakes before they erupt, and they often vent steam or show other signs of being active before they blow big. Lassen woke up on May 30, 1914, after 27,000 years of being dormant, and there were about 400 eruptions between 1914 and 1921, including the one we commemorate today (the biggest eruption of them all).

Because it was the first U.S. volcano to erupt in the 1900s, Lassen Peak's eruptions and activity were very well photographed and studied.

although of course scientists monitor tectonic activity
and earthquakes in case the volcano shows signs
of becoming active once again!
When two plates collide, volcanoes can
form above the collision zone.

Earthquakes

The most powerful earthquake ever recorded occurred in Chile on this date in 1960. It ranged from 9.4 to 9.6 on the "moment magnitude scale" (expressed in the terms we are pretty familiar with from the Richter Scale). 

Unfortunately, the "Great Chilean Earthquake"
and the tsunamis that resulted from the quakes
caused a lot of damage and many deaths.

The earthquake set off tsunamis that did more damage, even, than the original 10-minute-long shake. The tsunamis kicked off waves up to 82 feet tall; a tsunami devastated Hilo, Hawaii, several local tsunamis battered the Chilean coast, and high waves affected faraway spots like the Philippines and Japan!

Like the volcano, this powerful earthquake had some warning - but the warning was an earlier almost-as-powerful earthquake! On May 21, 1960, an 8.1 quake rocked Chile. On May 22, 1960, two more strong earthquakes hit in the same locale as the first; fifteen minutes after the third quake, the monster 9.4 quake hit around 280 miles (460 km) away from the first three.

Smaller aftershocks shook Chile until June 6.

Just as the collisions of tectonic plates
can cause volcanoes, these collisions
can also cause earthquakes.


Tectonic plates cause what has been
called "continental drift" - the slow
changing of the number and position 
of the continents.




June 26 – Madagascar's Independence Day

When I say “Madagascar,” do you think of the DreamWorks movie? Or of the real-life island off the coast of Africa?

Many biologists are studying
Madagascar's unique lifeforms
.
I think of a biological hotspot. That means a place with a lot of animal and plant diversity, and a place with a lot of unique species that don't exist anywhere else. Like other islands, Madagascar was a place where creatures could evolve in relative isolation from other places – and so 90% of its wildlife isn't found anywhere else on Earth!

If you're like me, you might wonder how the plants and animals got onto Madagascar in the first place, if it was so isolated. Well, a long, long time ago (hundreds of millions of years in the past) there were two supercontinents, Laurasia and Gondwana. They had been created when the landmass we call Pangaea broke up (we're talking continental drift, also known as plate tectonics), and Gondwana started to travel southward. Pretty much all of the land mass that is now in the Southern Hemisphere was part of Gondwana: Africa, South America, Australia, Antarctca, India, and Madagascar. So lifeforms were not isolated from each other during the Permian Period, when Pangea existed, and even through the early Jurassic Period, when Gondwana started to break apart, plants and animals weren't particularly isolated from one another. It has only been the past 88 million years or so that Madagascar was isolated from other land masses.

(Did I just say ONLY 88 million years???)

But today we are not celebrating Madagascar's independence from Gondwana and other land masses. Instead, today Madagascar celebrates its independence from France in 1960. Along with the usual feasting and dancing and fireworks, the people of Madagascar enjoy presentations of Hira Gasy, which is a musical version of Malagsay folklore, with singers and dancers portraying pieces of poetry and favorite folk tales.


Lemurs and Medicines...

Because there were no monkeys or apes to compete with, lemurs flourished in Madagascar. The original species branched off into more than 103 species and sub-species of lemurs – and at least 17 species have gone extinct since humans arrived on the island!






There are three times as many palm species as there are on all the rest of Africa, and there are many other unique plant species on the island. One species has led to medicines to treat certain cancers, and scientists hope to discover other cures or treatments among the plant species found on this island only.
