Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on this date in 1847, Sarah Dodson loved to draw when she was a teeny child, age 3. But her father - who was an amateur artist himself - discouraged her from doing and learning about art.
He thought girls and women should not seriously pursue art!
When Dodson's father died, she was around 25 years old, and she began to study art with masters. Dodson soon decided to move to Paris.
She ended up spending most of her adult life in Europe, mostly Paris and England, but she returned to the U.S. to exhibit and paint, including painting a mural for the World's Columbian Expo.
I wonder if we would have even more wonderful Dodson works if her father had let her study art earlier?
