"Retro" is something influenced by the style (in fashion or music, for example) of the recent past.
It could be an accurate copy - like digging an article of clothing out of a parent's (or grandparent's!) closet and copying it in your own size. Same sort of fabric, same general lines, same sort of trim, same everything.
Or wearing your hair in a 70's-style afro.
In music, a retro song that is a very close copy of the original is Weezer's 2018 cover of Toto's 1981 Africa.
But most retro things are are a mix of old and new. They're a new take on an old style, a fusion of new and old, or a song redone with a different twist. Like some of these modern versions of "hippie" styles:
Musically, I think that the 2015 Disturbed version of The Sound of Silence is just as awesome - but a bit more hard-hitting-modern - as the 1965 Simon and Garfunkel original - and it doesn't try to be exactly the same.
