February 27 – National Retro Day

Posted on February 27, 2020

"Retro" is something influenced by the style (in fashion or music, for example) of the recent past.

It could be an accurate copy - like digging an article of clothing out of a parent's (or grandparent's!) closet and copying it in your own size. Same sort of fabric, same general lines, same sort of trim, same everything.

Or wearing your hair in a 70's-style afro.

In music, a retro song that is a very close copy of the original is Weezer's 2018 cover of Toto's 1981 Africa

But most retro things are are a mix of old and new. They're a new take on an old style, a fusion of new and old, or a song redone with a different twist. Like some of these modern versions of "hippie" styles:

Musically, I think that the 2015 Disturbed version of The Sound of Silence is just as awesome - but a bit more hard-hitting-modern - as the 1965 Simon and Garfunkel original - and it doesn't try to be exactly the same.
