May 7, 2013 - Happy Birthday, Rabindranath Tagore

He is probably the only person to have written the national anthems of two different nations! (India and Bangladesh)

He was a polymath—someone who is considered highly accomplished in several different fields. (Including music, writing, and painting)
He was the first non-European to win the Nobel Prize in Literature.

I have read that, in India, Tagore's writings are among the first that children read. He modernized Bengali art, revolutionized Bengali literature by using colloquial language, and introduced the best of Indian culture to the West. In additions to creating paintings and drawings, hundreds of writings, and 2,000 songs, Tagore started a university!

Celebrate Tagore!
Here are three poems by Rabindranath Tagore.

Selected Writings for Children, by Rabindranath Tagore, may be available in your library. (And if it isn't...really, why isn't it?)

Here is a showcase of some of Tagore's art.

The British Museum website also offers a gallery of his art.
