May 8 - Parents' Day in South Korea

Posted on May 8, 2019

In the past, Mother's Day was celebrated every May 8 in South Korea. But of course dads are important and worthy of being celebrated, just like moms, so now the holiday includes both.

Actually, the entire month of May is considered Family Month, and May is dotted with holidays: Children's Day on May 5 and Teacher Day on May 15, as well as Parents' Day...today!

Kids give their parents carnations - usually red carnations!

Family events focus on the parens, and there are public celebrations including giving out parenting awards.

One place that some South Korean parents may want to visit during their special day is the Buddhist temple on the shores of Haeundae Beach. Its location is gorgeous, its architecture and sculptures are gorgeous, and it may even be gorgeously decorated with paper lanterns for the upcoming (May 12-13) Buddhist Birthday Festival!
