It's impossible, right?
On this date in 2014, an article was published about the seemingly-impossible sand sculptures built by Matthew Kaliner, who is both a Harvard University sociology lecturer AND a sandcastle artist.
Unlike many artists who actually pay the bills via selling art, Kaliner sees his sand sculptures as just playing. On a day when he has time to do one of his "drip sand castle" sculptures, Kaliner looks around on the beach for stuff he can use for a new creation. Not having a plan ahead of time, not bringing materials and people he needs to execute a plan, frees him up for joyful exploration and creativity.
Of course, like all sand castles, Kaliner's pieces are very temporary!
Here is a simple demonstration of the basic drip sand castle technique. This short video has some verbal description. This longer video is a fun time-lapse on drip castles!
Here are a few Kaliner sculptures I particularly like:
And here is a drip sand castle (made by somebody else) that looks more like...a castle!
