January 7 - Old Rock Day

Posted on January 7, 2020

When you hear that today is "Old Rock Day," do you think of elderly rockers like Rolling Stones stars Mick Jagger and Keith Richards (both age 76)?

Well, as old as they are, Old Rock Day actually celebrates MUCH older rocks and rolling stones. We're talking hundreds of millions of years old, in some cases.

Old Rock Day is also a day to celebrate fossils. Not "fossils" like Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, but real, actual remains of ancient life forms. The fossil record includes insects trapped in amber; petrified wood, teeth, and bones; stone molds or casts of foot/paw/claw prints and occasionally of skin and feathers; shells and actual teeth or bones; and traces of lifeforms such as nests, tunnels and burrows, or poop (coprolite is fossilized poop!).
