April 19 – National Health Day in Kiribati

Posted on April 19, 2017

Today's Kiribati holiday is about one of the most important things in the world: health. It's hard to enjoy nature, beauty, food, art, even wealth - if you don't have health!

Kiribati is an island nation in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. It seems to me that this lovely paradise should be very good for health - but Kiribati is one of the most endangered nations in the world. As global warming causes ice sheets in Greenland and Antarctica to melt, sea level is rising. Two of the smallest, flattest islands of Kiribati have already disappeared under rising seas - and if things don't change, the whole nation might be gone by the end of the century!

Did you know that there are some proposals to build an artificial Kiribati? This plan has a central tower on each artificial atoll - a tower in which some 30,000 people could live and work. The tower shaft would be used to grow fruits and vegetables.

Each tower would be surrounded by a floating base - which is tethered to the ocean floor far below - with farmland, more livable areas, forests, beaches, and seaports.

That would be...wow!
