The famous street artist Banksy usually creates his masterpieces on walls and fences...
But on this date in 2015 he opened an "art project" that was a bit like a twisted, evil version of an amusement park. "Dismaland" was prepared in secret in a coastal resort town in England, Weston-super-Mare. It consisted of ten new works by Banksy plus lots of works by 58 other artists. Tickets were sold to the general public for a mere 3 pounds each, and visitors could stroll around and see the various 2-D, 3-D, and performance-art pieces. The whole place closed, as planned, 36 days after it opened.
Usually, the reflection of a statue might be disrupted by movement of the clear water. At Dismaland, the water is murky, and the statue itself looks disrupted! |
"A family theme park unsuitable for children" is how Banksy described the project. How...unusual!
Here are a few pics:
You can see that much of the art project is a comment on the nature of theme parks. From the security you have to pass to go into an amusement park, to the possible misuse of animals to entertain us, what do amusement parks say about us?
