July 20 - Happy Birthday, Gisele Bündchen

Posted on July 20, 2020

I became interested in Gisele Bündchen partly because that German name surprised me when I read that she was Brazilian...

...But mostly because I had read that Bündchen was an environmental activist.

And then I saw her photo:

Wow! This Brazilian environmental activist with a German last name was gorgeous, glamorous, and married to football superstar Tom Brady?

I looked her up - and it turns out that she is a superstar, too: a supermodel!

Bündchen is described, in addition, as a businesswoman, author, and actor.

So...wow!

I am not all that into modeling and fashion, but I was impressed by Bündchen's more than 1,200 magazine covers, the fact that she is credited with pioneering a way of walking the runway (it's called a horse walk because it is a stomp-kick kind of movement with high-lifted knees), and the fact that she is credited with ending an era of modeling called "heroin chic" and kick-starting a new era of healthier, curvier models!

In addition to working with Doctors Without Borders, the Red Cross, and Save the Children, Bündchen has been a Goodwill Ambassador for the U.N. for more than a decade!

A highlight of Bündchen's environmental work is working on saving the Amazon rainforest - which of course is in her homeland of Brazil. She has worked on cleaning up water pollution, ending deforestation, conserving biodiversity, and conserving fresh water. She has worked on climate change and sustainability and eliminating food waste and and and...!

I guess when you are rich and successful, you can spend a little money on charity AND you can more easily make an impact, because you already have fans. But few leverage their money and fame into such great causes! Hooray for you, Ms. Bündchen!

By the way, Gisele Bündchen has FIVE SISTERS, including a fraternal (not identical) twin sister, and she speaks Portuguese, Spanish, English, and some French. Since she is of German descent, I wondered, why not German? Well, she says that she learned it in school but doesn't use it - and so she has forgotten it!
