November 26 - Constitution Day in India

Posted on November 26, 2019

The Constituent Assembly of India adopted the nation's constitution on this date in 1949. The first Constitution Day - celebrated in 2015 - was a big deal (you know, compared to most nations' Constitution Days!), with essay contests and online quiz competitions, lectures and readings in schools, debates in universities - lots of opportunity to discuss ideas and learn about the constitution!

There was even a "Run for Equality"!

When a constitution is adopted in 1949, why start celebrating it in 2015? Well, the main writer of India's constitution, B. R. Ambedkar, was born in 1891, so 2015 was the year of the 125th anniversary of his birth. Indians celebrated Ambedkar's contributions and ideas all year long!

India by the numbers:

#7 in size

3.3 million km

#2 in population

1.35 billion people!

#19 in population density

412 people per square km

# 7 in Gross Domestic Product - in other words, how wealthy is the nation as a whole?
3.16 trillion USD (United States Dollars)
# 141  in GDP per capita - in other words, if that wealth were evenly spread out among all those people, how much would each person have?

$2,036 USD per person per year
(As a comparison, GDP per capita in the U.S. is around $62,000 per person per year!)

Obviously, there is a lot more to be done, but India
has halved the number of people living in poverty in
just one decade!
