This is tragic, but the next step - where do they go next? - can compound the tragedy.
It's difficult for a nation or other region that is struggling with unemployment or drought or other problems to take in large groups of people, no matter how great their need.
Some people hope that pretending they don't notice a refugee crisis will keep them from having to make tough decisions. Some people say, "We cannot take any more. We're struggling to feed all the people we have now!" Others want to allow refugees to come to their country - as long as they don't come too close to their own community. Still others open their hearts and even homes and give way more than their "fair" share.
United Nations Secretary General António Guterres said, "I’ve met so many who have lost so much. But they never lose their dreams for their children or their desire to better our world. They ask for little in return – only our support in their time of greatest need."

There are a lot of resources on the U.N. website.
