August 7 – Kiribati Youth Day

Posted on August 7, 2019

Because August 7 is supposed to be a celebration and is all about healthy lifestyles for kids and young people, I expected there to be sports competitions, dancing and singing contests, and general merriment. Apparently, all of that will happen today.

The surprises for me are:

(1) The day starts with a "solemn" parade. Why solemn (serious, unsmiling)?

(2) The day ends with a youth beauty contest. Many people, these days, worry about anything targeted at children that puts too much emphasis on appearance / body image / "beauty"... Of course, there are still beauty contests all over the world, including in my nation (the U.S.), and there are plenty of baby and kid beauty contests all over, too. It just always surprises me when I see it!

After all, don't you think all of Kiribati's children are pretty darn beautiful?

(Note: many sources claim that Kiribati's Youth Day is always on August 7, unless that date falls on a Sunday, but one source claims that this holiday is celebrated on the first Monday of August.)

The most important thing for the health of Kiribati's youth is to halt climate change - and that is not something that the parents and teachers of Kiribati can do. Global warming is - obviously - a GLOBAL, worldwide problem, but the people of Kiribati and other low-lying island nations will lose their homes and livelihoods first!

Is it really okay with the world if Kiribati is wiped off the map?
