March 16 - Lips Appreciation Day

Posted on March 16, 2019

A day for appreciating your lips?

Sure! Why not?

Lips are important in eating, drinking, speaking, whistling, smiling, and of course kissing!

Here are some lip facts for you to ponder - while pampering your lips with lip balm:

  • Lips are about 100 times more sensitive than fingertips.
  • Lips are as unique as fingerprints.

  • Lips don't have sweat glands, which is why they can dry so quickly.

  • Lips seem pinker than other parts of the face because the skin is much thinner and lacks melanin, so the color of blood shows through.
  • Other mammals also have lips - these bits of tissue attached to muscles are extremely important for mammal babies, who get their nutrition by sucking down their mothers' milk.
However, we aren't sure why other mammals don't have such clear borders between pink lips and the surrounding skin. Or we could say that we are not sure why other mammals don't have lips like ours - in which the soft, pink inner skin is permanently turned outward, exposed.

  • Some other species kiss - for example, chimpanzees sometimes kiss after a fight, in order to make peace.

By the way, it's important to protect your lips with lip balm or lipstick - protect against drying out AND protect against harmful UV rays.
