February 25 – Far-Apart National Days

Today, in the Eurasian nation of Georgia, people are commemorating Soviet Occupation Day. It's a solemn day of remembering the victims of political repression; flags are flown at half-staff.


Travel west about a third of the world, to the Caribbean Sea and to the Dominican Republic. There people are celebrating Armed Forces Day - and the birthday of independence hero Matias Ramón Mella. In two days, Dominicans will be celebrating their Independence Day! 

Patriotic holidays are a bit like that: many are happy, and others are sad. They are times to remember shared history, and hopefully learn from it. They are times to be proud of the good aspects and actions on one's nation, of the strength shown during terrible times, of the solidarity of the people.
