January 25 – National Big Wig Day

(Last Friday in January)

There are people, including kids, who'd like to have some wigs to help them cope with disease-caused hair loss.

But good, sturdy wigs are expensive. Fun wigs and Halloween wigs like bright pink synthetic wigs can cost as little as $15 (USD)...

...but wigs that can used over and over, wigs that can be washed and brushed and maybe even styled, cost more like hundreds of dollars (USD) - although there is a range from as little as $50 to more like $1000.

Anyway, a lot of the people who need good multi-use wigs can't afford them.

A woman named Patty Sharkey figured out that she could start a fun holiday that raises money for these needed wigs - and, you guessed it, that day was National Big Wig Day.

Here are some ideas for celebrating Big Wig Day:

Have a party at your house. Get a few fun-and-cheap wigs, or ask people to bring their own, and put out some snacks plus a donation jar. You can have some silly fun with anything from wig-inspired karaoke to wig-augmented skits to...? Whatever money you get in the donation jar can be sent to a wig-providing charity like American Cancer Society's Look Good Feel Better division, Wigs for Kids, or Hospitality House of Boone, NC (which has a Big Wig Day link).

Or have a party at a restaurant or school or place of work. Again, make donations absolutely voluntary (of course), but bring attention to the donation jar and the day with some wacky wigs and some funny fun.

Be sure to take some pics and spread the word and HAVE FUN! You may want to share photos on social media and on National Big Wig Day's website

Big wigs aren't just a 18th-Century thing...

...or a clown thing...

...or a drag queen thing...

...or a Cher thing...

...or a Lady Gaga thing...

Big wigs can be a fun thing, a super high-fashion thing, an almost-anything thing!

By the way, you've probably heard the term "bigwig" used for an important person - a boss, or a celebrity, or a really rich person. Well, the Big Wig Day people point out that each of us is a bigwig in our own life!
