May 3 - International Doodle Dog Day

Writing about holidays during a global pandemic is so tricky - because so many traditions cannot be done when we are in lockdown and social distancing. Dinner gatherings, live performances, parties, going door-to-door, parades, huge pillow fights or water-slinging fun or colored-powder-sprinkling fun, or smushing tomatoes over one another or running in a crowd alongside bulls - yeah, most holiday fun is impossible to do in our current situation! 

So I was very excited to see a holiday that might work out for stay-home-ing folks! International Doodle Dog Day? What could be more stay-home-stay-safe than drawing and doodling???

Turns out, International Doodle Dog Day has nothing to do with doodling (as in drawing) - it's about poodle-mix dogs. Specifically, it's about people who own poodle mixes (aka doods) gathering together with their dogs for a variety of events. And the whole thing has been postponed to September. 


Because of the global pandemic, which many experts expect to diminish over the summer but then roar back with a second wave - in September!

Sigh.

But I thought, why not doodle dogs today anyway?? Here and here are some ideas of easy ways to draw cute dogs. And here is an article about how you might be able to make money selling doodles - including dog doodles!

March 28 – Happy Birthday, Abraham Walkowitz

In the 1880s, Jews in Russia faced pogroms (violent government-incited riots) that killed many and ran off many others. Perhaps that's why the very young Abraham Walkowitz (born on this date in 1878) and his mother left Siberia, Russia, and came to the U.S.

Walkowitz always loved to draw. As a child he drew all over the floors and "everything" with chalk. 

Later he studied art in Europe, and it was there - specifically in France - that he met a dancer who was also from the U.S.; Isadora Duncan had grown up in California, but she lived most of her life in Europe and the Soviet Union.

Like many other artists and thinkers of the time, Walkowitz was impressed by the way that Isadora Duncan shrugged off the "rules" of dance, created her own never-before-seen style, and portrayed freedom and beauty with her movements. Duncan is considered the Mother of Modern Dance, and Walkowitz was inspired by her creativity.

How inspired was Walkowitz?


He created more than 5,000 drawings of Isadora Duncan. These drawings, which capture the fluidity and freedom of Duncan's movements, are considered by some to be his most significant achievement.

February 6 – National Doodle Day in the U.K.

Today Epilepsy Action (a charity in the U.K.) is raising money by celebrating National Doodle Day: drawing a line through epilepsy. You can check out the official Doodle Day website,  which includes some celebrity doodles that are being auctioned off as a fundraiser. There are also downloads and resources and of course a link for donations.

Another part of that website is “Doodle Meanings.” There you will find some great info on what doodles are, why people do it, and how you can interpret doodles. 

Have you heard of Zendoodling? It is the art of drawing designs using a variety of patterns within shapes. When you create a zendoodle, you tend to drift into a calm and quiet state of mind. Your focus on your hand and the patterns you are creating draw your mind away from your everyday concerns.
