November 18 - William Tell Shoots an Apple Off His Son's Head – Or Does He?

William Tell is a folk hero of Switzerland. He is said to have broken an unreasonable rule of the Austrian man, Albrecht Gessler, who ruled his region with brutality. Gessler's punishment for Tell, we are told, was that Tell had to shoot an apple off the head of his son, Walter. If Tell didn't try the task, Gessler assured him, both he and his son would be executed. On the other hand, if William Tell succeeded, they would both freed.

So, on November 18, 1307, William Tell raised his crossbow and took two crossbow bolts from his quiver. He shot one of the bolts toward his son—and neatly split the apple in half. At this point, Tell and his son should have been freed.


However, Gessler was curious about why Tell had taken two bolts from his quiver. He asked, and Tell told him that, if he had failed at the marksman task and killed his son, he would have used the second bolt to kill Gessler.

Angry, Gessler broke his promise and had William Tell tied up and carried to a boat on Lake Lucerne. He intended to have Tell taken across the lake and locked up in his castle. However, a storm broke out, and, in the confusion, Tell managed to escape. He went by land to the castle and laid in wait for Gessler. When the latter arrived, Tell shot and killed him.


William Tell's accuracy as a marksman and bravery in escaping and assassinating a ruthless tyrant led, according to legend, to a rebellion and the eventual formation of the Swiss Confederation.

Legend or History?

Many people tell this story as a true historic event. Specific names are mentioned, and there is a very specific date tied to the main event as well. The story is widely repeated and has inspired at least one play as well as paintings and murals. It sounds legit, right?

However, there is apparently no good evidence that William Tell, his son Walter, or Albrecht Gessler ever lived. Perhaps most convincing that the story is a myth rather than a history is the fact that there is a very similar—but earlier—Danish legend. Only the names have been changed: a Danish man named Palnatoki was forced by King Harald Bluetooth to shoot an apple off his son's head. Palnatoki took several arrows from his quiver and, when asked why, he explained that if he had struck his son with the first arrow, he would have turned his bow on the king.

So...the story of William Tell is probably a fiction.



The “William Tell Overture”

A composer named Gioachino Rossini wrote an opera inspired by the legend of William Tell, and the instrumental beginning of this opera is pretty famous. It has been used, over used, and sometimes even abused in popular media—including becoming the theme song of the 50s TV show The Lone Ranger.

Modern Heroes in Switzerland

One of the hugest science experiments of all times is happening right now in Switzerland, and the scientists (of many different nationalities) who work there are truly modern heroes. One American scientist, Katherine McAlpine, created a rap video about the Large Hadron Collider at CERN—and even though it is scientifically accurate, the video went viral!


(A viral video is one that is widely shared and spread “by word of mouth” on the internet. The “Large Hadron Rap” has been viewed more than eight MILLION times.)

By the way, in the video, McAlpine refers to CERN looking for the Higgs boson - and scientists did discover it, just as they had hoped to.

November 10 - Charmed Quark Day

You can't see atoms, but their existence explains SO MUCH, so you accept that they really exist.

You can't see the parts of an atom - the protons, neutrons, and electrons - but their existence explains SO SO MUCH, so you accept that they really exist.

You can't see the parts of protons and neutrons - quarks - but their existence explains SO SO SO MUCH, you really should accept that they truly do exist!

Two up quarks and one down quark make a proton, and two down quarks and one up quark make a neutron. But there are all these other quarks, too - which were first predicted because they make sense mathematically, and which were only later discovered using particle accelerators.

Making teensy-weensy particles go REALLY fast (like 99.997% of the speed of light) and then smashing them together helps us understand the universe more because - even though temperatures, speeds, and energies like the ones inside particle accelerators are way unfamiliar to us average humans - they are definitely known in the universe. 

Stars exploding, the Big Bang, quasars, and cosmic rays are all examples that match or beat the extreme conditions in our accelerators.


Today is Charmed Quark Day because two different research groups discovered evidence of its existence, around this date in 1976. As I mentioned before, this quark had already been suggested by theory.

Charm or charmed quark is sort of a buddy to strange quark - I love these names so much! - just as up and down are buddies, and top and bottom are buddies. Quarks and leptons (like electrons) make up matter; bosons (like the gluons that "glue" together quarks and the photons that make up light and X-rays and radio waves) are called "force carriers." 

And if you understood all of that - good! Now take an advanced class in particle physics and explain it to me!

July 18 – Les Horribles Cernettes Make a WWW Debut

Particle physicists work with the deepest mysteries of the universe - and most of them probably aren't doing it "for the money." They love their work, I'd guess. They hunger for answers to HUGE questions about TEENSY things and amazingly HIGH energy.

The European Organization for Nuclear Research, which is called CERN (based on the original name, in French), operates the largest particle physics lab in the world and employees a lot of particle physicists. But of course CERN also has to hire some other people. Someone needs to take out the trash and clean the bathrooms, for example. CERN needs data analysts, managers, writers, graphic artists, clerks, human resource personnel...and on and on and on!

One thing particle physicists love to do is to smash and crash teensy particles together to try to detect even smaller particles. To do this, they need particle accelerators that get particles moving close to the speed of light! Most of these particle accelerators are also colliders (that's where the smashing and crashing come in!). The most famous of CERN's colliders is the Large Hadron Collider.

Well, once upon a time, almost 30 years ago, a woman named Michele de Gannaro worked for CERN as a graphic designer. Her partner was a nuclear physicist, and one time during a CERN festival, de Gannaro stepped onto a stage and sang a supposedly-sad-but-really-funny song about how lonely it was to be the girlfriend of a physicist.



That song was such a hit that de Gannaro and others ended up forming a group. The music was doo-wop in style, but the group was considered a parody pop group - because all the lyrics were intent on making people laugh.

The group name - The Horrible CERN Girls, but in French - was created to have the same initials as the Large Hadron Collider. The group is billed as "the one and only High Energy Rock Band" - because, of course, CERN deals with high-energy physics.

I was surprised to find out that a photo of Les Horribles Cernettes - this picture:


- was the very first photograph of a band and one of the first photos ever published on the World Wide Web. How, I wondered, did that come about?

Well, it turns out that CERN was the birthplace of the World Wide Web! Inventor Tim Berners-Lee wrote the first web browser in 1990 while working there, and the WWW was first released to other research institutions in and later to the general public in 1991. 

And in 1992, right after the band played in another CERN festival, Berners-Lee asked them for some scanned photos to put onto the information system he'd just invented.

The photo was taken on this date in 1992 - and I'm not sure exactly when in 1992 it was uploaded to the WWW, nor when it was first clicked, but it's amazing that the first band to be there was NOT someone mongo-famous like the Beatles...


...but instead a science-y, funny, and not-all-that widely known band!
