September 8 - Happy Birthday to Crafty Artists

"Arts and crafts" is something that people include in kids' programs held at public parks, at Girl Scout meetings, in old folks' homes, and so forth. You say "arts and crafts," and I'm as likely to think of macaroni pieces glued to a piece of cardboard as I am of the late-19th- and early-20th-Century Arts and Crafts movement.


Like any other art movement, the Arts and Crafts movement was complex, featured the ideas of many different individuals, and is hard to sum up in just a sentence or two. But one motivation for the movement was the fact that household items were, by and large, no longer hand crafted but rather were manufactured goods coming out of factories. In the 1880s, designers criticized these goods as poorly designed and also too ornate (overly decorated, with too many poorly-thought-out details). 

William Morris, one of the "biggies" in the Arts and Crafts movement, thought that design and manufacture should be integrated. Design is sort of a mental or intellectual thing - dreaming up an idea of what something looks like, and communicating that idea with drawings and descriptions. Actual manufacture of the object is, of course, physical. And Morris thought that whoever did the design should ALSO know how to do the physical task of making the item and should also be making decisions about the manufacturing of the item.

He thought that the utility - the actual, practical use - of the item was more important than the appearance of the item - but he still cared a lot about the appearance. As a matter of fact, he thought people should be surrounded by beautiful, well-made things.

The result of the Arts and Crafts movement was that people who designed things, and also people who did things that were considered "handicrafts," making practical things like bowls and houses and shawls and jewelry, were elevated to the status of artists. It used to be that only painters and sculptors were "really" artists. 

(We still use "fine arts" to mean the kinds of products, like paintings and statues, that have no practical use but are enjoyed only for their aesthetic or intellectual appeal.)

Today, in order to celebrate the Arts and Crafts movement and its results, we celebrate the birthdays of four artists who work with "crafts" mediums:

Barbara Walch - ceramics

Barbara Walch lives in Maine and sells cut flowers, dried
flowers, potted flowers, and other plants at a roadside stand.

And she also makes these beautiful pieces of
stoneware using an unusual "pinch" technique:




Sonja Blomdahl - glass

Sonja Blomdahl is a glassblower who studied her craft (art)
in Sweden. Today she lives in Seattle, but her work can be
seen in museums and galleries all over the world.





Richard H. Reinhardt - metal smithing / jewelry making

Silversmith and jewelry designer Richard H. Reinhardt
not only plied his craft (art), he also taught it, founding
the jewelry and metalsmithing programs at the Philadelphia
Museum of Art.




Augustus Aaron Wilson - wood carving

Augustus Aaron "Gus" Wilson was a lighthouse keeper.
He whittled and carved wooden bird decoys every
moment he could, and he sold them to a store for just
75 cents apiece! (Wow!) It is estimated that, in his lifetime, he
carved more than 5,000 pieces.

Eventually people began to appreciate his carving skill
and his imagination, and his work became collectible.

And, at that point, people began to pay a whole lot more
than 75 cents for one of his pieces. As a matter of fact,
in 2005, one decoy was sold at auction for $195,000!!!!
 
Although most of his carvings are of ducks, shore birds, seagulls,
and songbirds, Wilson occasionally carved other animals as well.





December 13 – Anniversary of a Prophecy by Dickens

Charles Dickens is well known as the author who wrote such famous novels as Great Expectations, A Christmas Carol, and David Copperfield. However, he wrote lots more than novels, including plays, short stories, and non-fiction.

One bit of Dickens's writing I discovered recently is Household Words: A Weekly Journal. The journal, which was published for almost a decade, was edited by Dickens, but he wrote a great deal of it, too.

Here is what he published on this date in 1856:
What do you think of a metal as white as silver, as unalterable as gold, as easily melted as copper, as tough as iron; which is malleable, ductile, and with the singular quality of being lighter than glass? Such a metal does exist, and that in considerable quantities on the surface of the globe.”
Do you know what metal Dickens is describing?

It turns out that it's (drumroll, please) aluminum.

Although aluminum is the third most abundant element in the earth's crust, it is the most recently discovered element in common use, and it wasn't until 1854 that people learned how to produce items with it! 

(Remember, people started using iron, gold, silver, and copper thousands of years ago, compared to a mere 160 years ago for aluminum!)

Dickens went on to say that aluminum may become more and more useful in households, because of its light weight. He wrote: “It may probably send tin to the right-about-face, drive copper saucepans into penal servitude, and blow up German-silver sky-high into nothing. Henceforth, respectable babies will be born with aluminium spoons in their mouths.”

(German silver is a mix of metals: copper, nickel, and often zinc. It used to be used a lot more in the past than it is now. And Dickens's guess about aluminum bumping tin and copper into less use is right-on as well. Spoons, like other Western cutlery, are generally made from stainless steel, nowadays, BUT we still say that rich kids are born with silver—not aluminum—spoons in their mouths!)


Aluminium or aluminum?

I don't know if you noticed that my Dickens quote said aluminium, while I've been saying aluminum? The metallic element is spelled differently, with an extra “i,” in addition to being pronounced differently, in Britain and other English-speaking locales than it is in Canada and the U.S. Dickens lived in England, therefore he used aluminium; I live in the U.S., thus my spell check program and I use aluminum.

By the way, Dickens thought the metal's name was too much of a mouthful, and he suggested that a shorter name be adopted if the metal were to have any success in being used. I'm glad to see that we North Americans, at least, took his advice and made the name one syllable shorter!

December 6, 2012 - Miners' Day

Miners do an incredibly important job, since we depend on metals to build our machines. And they do an incredibly dangerous job, too.
Mining used to be even more
dangerous a century ago...



Even these days, with safety equipment and procedures, miners face the possibility of gas explosions, equipment failure, roof falls and fires. Even miners who escape injury on the job often suffer from lung diseases or other health problems from mining.

Apparently one of the people who helped set aside this day to honor miners is author / Vietnam War veteran / NASA engineer Homer Hickam. He is really Homer Hickam, Jr., because his dad had the same name; his dad was a miner and eventually a mine supervisor in the coal fields of West Virginia. January 12, 2012 - Celebrating Platinum and Lithium



On this date in 1716, Antonio de Ulloa was born in Spain. He grew up to be an officer in the Spanish navy and the first Spanish governor of Louisiana...but he was also known for his explorations, his scientific observations and records. One of these observations was a “new” metal, which he “discovered” in Colombia; this is often credited as the modern discovery of the element platinum. (I put the words new and discovered in quotes because some peoples had mined and used platinum before this time.)

On this date in 1792, Johan August Arfwedson was born in Sweden. He grew up to be a chemist, and he discovered the element lithium by isolating it (as a salt) from the mineral petalite. (Later chemists would isolate lithium as a metal.)
