April 27 - Matanzas Mule Day

Today is not about celebrating the species called Matanzas mules, because there is no species called "Matanzas mules"!

Mules, of course, are the sterile offspring of horses and donkeys. There happened to be at least one mule in the little town of Matanzas, Cuba, on this date in 1898.

But this was the onset of the Spanish-American War. And just off the coast of Matanzas were ships from the United States Navy. They bombarded the town. 



Now, when you hear the word "bombard," you imagine hundreds of shells being lobbed at buildings, piers, and walls, and you assume the tragic loss of many lives. I am happy to report that that didn't happen.

According to the story, no humans died from the U.S. bombardment - the only Cuban that lost its life that day was a single mule.

The story continues that the mule was buried with full military honors, a band playing a dirge, hundreds of mourners - possibly to humiliate the U.S. Navy.

Or...did this happen at all? If the story of a single casualty from a naval action being a mule, and that mule being buried with military pomp, would be humiliating, maybe the humiliating story was just made up?

A story in the New York Times on August 5, 1898, reprinted from The London Globe, tells about the funeral of the Matanzas mule, and someone named Chief Officer Smalls claims to have attended said funeral. There is a long time between April 27 and August 5 - plenty of time, back then, for news to travel, but also plenty of time to rumors to spread and for people to misremember stuff. 

Anyway, whether or not it happened, the Matanzas Mule is now enshrined in poems and songs, including lines in which mourners looked with pity on the poor "bombarded mule."







March 28 – Mule Day in Columbia, Tennessee

I have already written about “Mule Day” on October 26, the anniversary of the arrival of mules in the United States. 

This is another celebration of “all things mule,” a tradition in Columbia, Tennessee, for almost 170 years. 

It began as Breeder's Day, which was a livestock show and mule market held on a single day once a year. But now it is a week-long festival that includes all sorts of shows and competitions.

Here are some of the things Mule Day festival-goers can enjoy:
  • a wagon train
  • an arts & crafts and flea market
  • Pickin' and Grinnin' (music and dancing)
  • clogging
  • a blue grass music fest
  • a pool tournament
  • a liars' contest
  • a parade
  • a knife auction

And, if that doesn't sound mule-oriented enough:
  • jackpot mule races
  • a mule auction
  • a riding mule show
  • log loading and pulling competitions


  • a miniature donkey and mule show
  • driving and riding mule shows
  • a gaited mule championship
  • and more!

And of course a ton of food! From ham and biscuits to a “Hee-Haw Chili Supper,” from a pancake breakfast to a bake sale, and loads of food booths.


The biology of mules

You probably know that a mule is the offspring of a male donkey and a female horse. Horses and donkeys are different species, and they have different numbers of chromosomes. Horses have 64 chromosomes, and donkeys have 62. Mules end up with 63 chromosomes. Because of the different structure and number of chromosomes, most mules are infertile – a pair of mules can't themselves have offspring.

Chromosomes are the threadlike organizing “packets” that contain most of the DNA of an animal (or other organism). A gene is an individual segment of DNA, and chromosomes contain many genes packed together. One way of thinking about it is to say that DNA is in genes, and genes are on chromosomes.

If a male horse and a female donkey have offspring, it is not called a “mule,” but rather a “hinny.” However, it is easier to breed mules than hinnies.

In nature it would be unusual for two species to breed together. So you may wonder why people would bother to breed horses and donkeys. Why do mules even exist?

Because mules are considered by many to have the best of both animals. They are more patient than horses, more sure-footed, more hardy. They live longer than horses and have more endurance for long journeys or heavy loads. They are faster than donkeys, and they are also less stubborn than donkeys (although “mulish” is a word we use for a really stubborn person...hmm...). Mules tend to be larger and more intelligent than either of their parents.

This “best from both” parents is called hybrid vigor.

October 26, 2012 - Mule Day

On this date in 1786, the first Spanish Jacks (male donkeys) arrived in the United States, a gift from the King of Spain. George Washington (not yet President of the U.S.) began to breed these donkeys with his female horses. And so began the history of mules in America.
Did you know that daddy mules and mommy mules don't breed to make baby mules? Mules cannot reproduce but are instead are created by horse-donkey breeding. What I didn't know is that mules are created when male donkeys and female horses are bred, and the result of female donkeys and male horses is called a hinny. Hinnies tend to look just like mules, and are also sterile (which means that they cannot reproduce or make babies).

Notice: there are male mules and female mules, and there are male hinnies and female hinnies.

Why would anyone want mules in a world that already has horses and donkeys?

Well, mules tend to be stronger than donkeys and more resistant to disease than horses. Actually, the fact that they are sterile is helpful in some situations—you don't have to worry about animals getting pregnant and giving birth—and may lead to mules' reputation of being tougher and more reliable than horses or donkeys. Mules are being used in Afghanistan by U.S. armed forces, carrying supplies to places where helicopters and Humvees cannot easily go.
