February 2 - Groundhog Day in the U.S. and Canada

According to folklore, if a groundhog coming out of its burrow on February 2 sees its shadow, it will go back into its burrow, and winter will continue for six more weeks. On the other hand, if the groundhog does not see its shadow, it will leave the burrow; this means that spring will come early.

Some towns hold early-morning festivals to watch the groundhog emerge from its burrow. There are also speeches, skits, and food. The largest celebration is held in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. When not suffering from a global pandemic, as many as 40,000 people gather in Punxsutawney on Groundhog Day, which has been celebrated there since at least 1886.


 
Groundhog Day became a lot more famous upon the release of the movie by the same name. Released in 1993 and starring Bill Murray, this movie is about a television weatherman forced to relive one particular Groundhog Day over and over again until he learns to become a better person.





Studies in both Canada and the U.S. show that the groundhog-shadow method of prediction is accurate between 37 and 39% of the time. (Of course, astronomically speaking, if the first day of spring is the vernal equinox, spring never “comes early”; however, this folk custom is more about weather than about the length of day and night or other astronomical phenomena. So these measures about “accuracy” speak to whether the weather will get more mild as the vernal equinox approaches, or if it will stay cold and stormy.)

It seems to me that, with just two settings (“6 more weeks of winter” or “early spring”), a prediction made by flipping a coin would be just as accurate, depending I suppose on the location and its general climate pattern. Don't you agree?

Predictions and Prophecies

It is important for people to be able to predict the weather. Farmers, in particular, need to know when to plant to avoid seedling-killing frosts, for example, or when rain is likely or unlikely to fall.


For centuries people have tried to predict the weather, and a certain amount of observation-based wisdom informed various folklores. However, some superstitions that are based on no evidence at all have developed, as well.


Unfortunately, climate systems and weather are complex enough to stymie, to some extent, even modern scientific predictions. Even though humans now have much more accurate data about climate and weather from around the world, as well as a much better understanding of how air pressure, moisture, and temperature interact to create a wide variety of weather phenomena, the chaotic nature of the atmosphere and the difficulty in understanding all the factors involved in meteorology means that it is hard to predict weather with certainty. Also, the longer the forecast (such as predicting the weather a week from now rather than tomorrow's forecast), the much more uncertain it is.

Some scientists working in other fields, however, can make EXCELLENT predictions. For example, astronomers have been able to predict eclipses and comet appearances quite precisely for years and decades, even centuries. Neptune and Pluto were di
scovered based on mathematical predictions that told astronomers to look for them—and also where to look.


Predicting what will happen in an experiment can be an important step, because then the experimenter can look for evidence that confirms or refutes the prediction.

Predicting what will happen in a card game can be very important. Ditto chess, football, and many other games and sports.



Predicting what goods and services people will buy, and at what price, is an important step in building a business. Economists try to predict general trends of buying, saving, investing, and selling in helping to eliminate inflation or to manage recessions, as well. Economic patterns are quite possibly harder to predict than weather patterns!

One reason it's hard to make accurate economic predictions
is because events that cannot be predicted (except in a
general way - like "at SOME point, there will be a global
pandemic") affect economies greatly.

Futurists study the current situation, the technologies that are being developed, trends, population growth and migrations, and the scientific theories that are just beginning to emerge in labs. From all of that data and using their own expertise, futurists make predictions about the future. How accurate the predictions are depends mostly on how good the data is and how “expert” the futurist is, but it also depends a bit on luck and happenstance. Arthur C. Clarke, a scientist and science fiction writer, predicted satellites in geo-stationary orbits (which we have) and lunar colonies (which we don't have...yet).


Some people say that making predictions is a mystical activity based on supernatural beliefs, but I think the word prophecy goes better with that sort of thing. Predictions can be very rational, science-based, math-based, evidence-based.

May 1 – Martin Z. Mollusk Day

This is the real Martin Z. Mollusk.
Today in Ocean City, New Jersey, people are gathering to see if a hermit crab named Martin Z. Mollusk can see his shadow.





The time? 11:00 in the morning.

The place? The beach adjacent to the Ocean City Music Pier.

The local high school's band will play “Pomp and Circumstance” to give the feeling of gravitas for the event.

This is some guy dressed up as Martin Z.
Mollusk.
Then a procession of pretend “celebrities” will parade into the area surrounding the “Circle of Truth,” and there will be a song or two and a few pretty speeches.

Then—the moment of truth—the hermit crab will emerge from hiding and either see, or not see, his shadow! If he sees his shadow, hooray! – summer comes to Ocean City a week early! If he doesn't – no worries, summer will still come...just right on time.

Okay, yes, this is a complete rip-off of Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania's, Groundhog Day. But it brings people into town on Thursday before the big Spring Block Party on the weekend. For several days there will be 350 vendors in the streets, live entertainment, pony rides, fun for the tens of thousands of people who come to town!

By the way, I read that, so far, Martin Z. Mollusk has ALWAYS seen his shadow!

Just a minute, here!

If Martin is a hermit crab, why is he “Martin Z. (the) Mollusk”? Don't you know, hermit crabs are crustaceans, like other crabs and shrimp and lobster?

What's the difference between mollusks and crustaceans?

Here's one way they are alike:

Neither mollusks nor crustaceans have an internal skeleton (bones).
Both of them have external skeletons – called exoskeletons. (Well, MOST mollusks and all crustaceans have exoskeletons. An octopus and a slug are examples of mollusks without skeletons of any sort.) We generally call these exoskeletons shells.

But they are really different in other ways:

This is a mollusk.
Crustaceans are more closely related to insects and spiders than mollusks are. Like insects and spiders, crustaceans have segmented bodies and paired, jointed legs. They also have two pairs of antennae.
Mollusks, on the other hand, have soft, unsegmented bodies and no legs or antennae. (Don't confuse the two soft sensory tentacles on top of a snail's head with antennae—they're very different.)


Now...what about the hermit crab?

A hermit crab lives in a hard shell and has hard, jointed legs and antennae. Its soft abdomen is unprotected when it is not “wearing” its shell.

In other words, as its name suggests, a hermit crab is a crustacean.

I think a lot of people get confused about hermit crabs because they almost always choose to “wear” (live in and carry around) the discarded shells of mollusks. (Once in a blue moon you'll see a hermit crab living inside a chunk of wood or something like that.) 

So, if you ever see a beautiful shell from a sea snail (a mollusk) walking around on jointed legs – you can be sure that the creature inside is a hermit crab, not the mollusk that created the shell.

I am wondering if every single person in Ocean City, New Jersey, thinks that hermit crabs are mollusks? Surely not. I think maybe Martin stole the last name “Mollusk” when he stole the mollusk shell he lives in!

One of the best things ever!

Did you know that there are times when a large mollusk shell becomes available, and what is called a “vacancy chain” of hermit crabs forms. This is a line of crabs from largest to smallest. As the first hermit crab in line leaves its shell to take possession of the large new shell, the next hermit crab in line gives up its shell to move into the shell the first hermit crab just abandoned. Then the next one in line drops its shell and moves into the larger shell of the second, and so on all the way down the line.

Isn't that cool? I wonder how long this process takes?

February 2, 2012 - Marmot Day in Alaska



and Hedgehog Day


In an earlier post, I wrote about today's main U.S. holiday, Groundhog Day. This is the day that an overlarge rodent comes out of his hole and supposedly predicts the weather. (If it's a clear day and the groundhog sees its shadow, there will be six more weeks of winter; if it's cloudy and the groundhog doesn't see its shadow, spring is almost here.) I didn't realize that this holiday got started in ancient Roman times, but with an entirely different animal: the hedgehog!

On the night of February 2, in Roman times, a hedgehog is brought out of its burrow to see if there is a moon-shadow. The shadow-spotting and weather-forecasting was probably a nighttime event because hedgehogs are nocturnal, which means that they sleep during the day and are active at night.

It is natural enough that people who celebrated this custom in Europe changed from hedgehogs to groundhogs, because there are no hedgehogs native to North or South America. (Nor are there hedgehogs in Australia. But there are 17 different species of hedgehogs in Europe, Asia, and Africa.)

Neither hedgehogs nor groundhogs live in Alaska, but Alaska marmots do! (In order to honor their own native ground squirrel, Alaskans have swapped out Groundhog Day for Marmot Day.

(Actually, groundhogs are a kind of marmot. Alaska marmots are a different species of marmots.)

Alaska marmots, like many other marmot species in the world, live in rocky areas and eat grass, flowering plants, berries, roots, moss, and lichen.
