October 22 – Twin Artists Born!

Posted October 22, 2018

Twins have always fascinated us. There are identical twins and fraternal twins and more rare types such as mirror-image twins and half-identical twins. Twins are usually raised together - they are, after all, brothers or sisters! - but sometimes there are circumstances when they are separated early in their life and they are raised in different environments, by different caregivers.

Most of us who are not twins ask how alike twins are. We often marvel at the fact that we can't tell them apart. Or we wonder why a pair of twins are so-so-so-so different. Scientists are particularly interested in identical twins who are raised separately - they try to suss out how the different upbringings of people who are identical DNA-wise impacts their lives.

Today is the birthday of two Estonian brothers, Kristjan and Paul Raud, who both chose to become painters and art teachers. They both became well known. Parts of their lives, they lived and worked far from one another. During other portions of their lives, they traveled and lived together.

Look how different their painting styles are:

Above are four paintings by Paul Raud.
He painted a lot of portraits, using a realistic
style. In his landscapes, he was influenced
by Impressionism.

Below are four paintings by Kristjan Raud.
He uses folklore elements, and his style is
similar to Primitivism.

August 7 – Twins Days Festival

Posted on August 7, 2015

Did you know that there is a town in Ohio called Twinsburg?

And did you know that every year that town hosts the largest annual gathering of twins and other “multiples” in the world?

This year is the 40th Annual Twins Days Festival!

We're talking about twins, triplets, quads, identical and fraternal, young and old, multiples and their families.

What do people do at a Twins Day gathering?

Everything from golf and volleyball to raffles and wiener roasts, the Double Take Parade and a Twins' Talent Show, fireworks and entertainment, a 5K race and a dance, karaoke and group photos.

Of course a huge part of the fun is getting to meet other twins and multiples, chatting with them about the joys and challenges of being a twin, and taking cute twins-together photos!

Take a peek at the official website for more!

Did you know...?

  • In addition to identical and fraternal twins, there are other, rarer types of twins, including half-identical twins, mirror image twins, mixed chromosome twins, and other types!

  • Also, some twins have different birthdays – or are even born in a different year! Of course, that can happen because some babies are born near midnight.

Let's say that one twin is born at 11:57 p.m. on April 18, and the other twin is born at 12:01 a.m. on April 19 – the twins are only born four minutes apart, but they have different birthdays.
A more extreme example is a baby born at, say, 11:55 p.m. on December 31, 2014 and the twin is born at 12:02 a.m. on January 1, 2015. Not only is the birthday different, the two babies are born in different months and years – even though they are only born seven minutes apart!

  • Sometimes, identical twins marry identical twins. There is a “twin couple” in China that ran a diner that was open for 21 hours a day, staging their shifts so that none of the twins were ever on at the same time. People thought it was just one couple running the diner, but they began to notice that neither the man or woman EVER SEEMED TO SLEEP! They began to be called “The Robot Couple.”

After three years, the truth finally came out that the super-couple was really TWO couples of identical twins!

May 11, 2012 - Birth of “Siamese Twins”

 – 1811

Once every 100,000 births or so twins are born with bodies that are joined. These conjoined twins may share internal organs and may or may not be surgically separated.

The first case of such twins widely known were the brothers Chang and Eng, who were born to Chinese parents in what was then called Siam (now called Thailand). Back then, it was not possible to safely separate the two boys, so they grew up attached at the chest with a piece of cartilage. Their two livers were also joined.

When the brothers were 18 years old, they were swimming (together—obviously, they had to do almost everything together), and a British merchant saw them. He paid the boys and their family to take the twins on a world tour, to be exhibited as a curiosity.

Eventually their contract with the merchant ran out, and Chang and Eng decided to move permanently to the United States. They bought a farm in North Carolina, took the last name “Bunker,” and became U.S. citizens. They bought some slaves to work the farm, and they even married two sisters! Between them, Chang and Eng had ten children, some of whom ended up fighting for the Confederacy in the Civil War.

Because Chang and Eng were so famous, conjoined twins have often been called “Siamese twins,” even though of course other conjoined twins were born elsewhere. Interestingly enough, when they were in Siam, the twins were called “the Chinese twins” because of their Chinese parents.
