October 27 - Black Cat Day

There used to be a big problem trying to get people to adopt black kittens and cats. I guess there was an association of black cats with witches, and an association of witches with evil?

Who, me? Evil?



A decade or so ago, several groups started campaigns to erase that association and help beautiful black felines become accepted and welcomed into homes. Years ago I wrote about Black Cat Appreciation Day, which is celebrated in August, and today's holiday is another day to promote acceptance of and love for black cats.




Of course, being so near Halloween, this will actually emphasize the connection between black cats and witches and Halloween itself - but surely that's an awesome thing, really? Don't we (most of us) love this harvest-time holiday?




By the way, I can't help noticing how many Halloween-ish holidays are clustering around the Big Night itself, these days. That is a sure sign that a holiday is hugely popular. Here are some of the other Halloween-adjacent days I have written about:

January 2 – Happy Mew Year for Cats

Today's holiday is, I guess, supposed to be funny - and is at least purrrr-fectly punny! 

If only cats were litter-ate, they would be feline pretty good about the wordplay. 





Cats and kittens make up a surprisingly large part of the internet - funny cat videos, adorably fluffy pics, Lolcat and Grumpy Cat memes, chubby cat gifs, and so forth. 



ThoughtCatalog once said that cats are the "unofficial mascot of the Internet," and 16% of the views of YouTube's pets and animals category - way more views than would be proportional to the number of species represented in that category!



I think cat jokes and general cat humor are popular because - on the one hand - cats seem so cool, above it all, so graceful and beautiful...









...and - on the other hand - they can also be silly and playful, they can be scared-y cats, they can be overly daring and get themselves into trouble!

May 12 - National Hug Your Cat Day

 Many people say that they are "dog people," and of course a lot of people are allergic to cats. So today is definitely not for everyone.

 But for those of us who own cats or love cats, today is great excuse to put in some time loving, cuddling, hugging, scratching, or petting our feline buddies.






Cats Rule...the Internet
For some reason, the internet is even more filled with cats than with dogs. As a matter of fact, dogs are more commonly searched online, but cat videos are way (way, way) more likely to go viral.

 There are books and at least one museum exhibit and articles aplenty about why cats are pretty much the mascots of the internet.

 Grumpy Cat has a wax figure at Madame Tussauds. There is even a convention about the topic: CatCon celebrates cats of the internet. 

 One theory about why cat videos are WAY more popular is that dogs more often acknowledge cameras, or those holding the cameras, and they seem more eager to please whoever is holding the camera. Dogs also show their entire range of emotions more outwardly than do cats. For sure, videos of dogs' excitement over the homecoming of soldiers, sailors, or other loved ones are way more common and appealing than are videos of cats reacting to homecomings.

 But cat videos are more often about cats on their own. Their often-stoic expressions and their seeming disinterest in the video actually serve to make us more interested. Cats tend to be more of a blank canvas on which we can project our own emotions. We see dog videos, and we feel that we understand - dogs are loyal and want to be loved. We see cat videos, and we are left wondering - what the heck are cats thinking?
