June 5 - National Veggie Burger Day

Posted on June 5, 2019

Do you love hamburgers?

Many folks do, and a charbroiled beef patty can be delicious in a well appointed burger! BUT -

Veggie burgers can be yummy, too!

One veggie patty is not like another!

I've had some veggie burgers that were just not as tasty as regular-old beef burgers.

On the other hand, I've had some veggie burgers that were super scrumdiddlyumptious!

Veggie burgers aren't all made of the same stuff, and they don't all taste the same - that's for sure!

Veggie burgers are always plant-based (sometimes plant-and-fungus-based) rather than animal-based. They have one or more of these ingredients: beans, including soybeans and black beans; grains, including couscous; nuts and seeds, including quinoa; vegetables such as sweet potatoes, cauliflower, corn, carrots; fungus, including mushrooms and mycoprotein.

You can see that these sweet-potato/quinoa veggie patties
DO have animal proteins, in the form of eggs. But there is
no beef or any other meat.

Many veggie burgers don't have any animal products.
Many veggie burgers really are tasty and have wonderful textures as well. And, let's face it, once you've got the entire rest of the burger...

cucumbers, tomatoes, and sweet pepper strips

...Maybe the patty isn't the most crucial part?

Why eat veggie burgers?

You may have heard about this little thing called climate change. One thing we can all do to help is to eat less beef - because cows belch carbon monoxide, which is a greenhouse gas. That doesn't mean that you and me should never, ever eat beef again - but maybe beef could be a super special treat, like steak; when we are eating something with a bun and bunches of condiments and toppings, a great tasting veggie patty does just fine.

If everyone who eats beef cuts back from eating it once a day to eating it once a month, we will need only 1/30th the number of cows!

Try a veggie burger today - and help save the planet!

May 15 - National Slider Day

Posted on May 15, 2017

Did you know that May is Hamburger Month?

And today, smack in the middle of Hamburger Month, is Slider Day.

I thought sliders were mini hamburgers. But I found some disagreement.

Some people say that sliders are ONLY mini hamburgers made by White Castle. There is a White Castle sandwich called "the Original Slider."

This Original Slider is a small, thin patty of ground beef cooked on a griddle with onions and on top of the beef, and the bun on top of the onions. The steam from the onions helps the thin patty to cook (I guess it's not flipped on the griddle), and the bun soaks up the aroma and flavor while it's being cooked. It's served with a slice of pickle inserted into the cooked slider.

Because they're small, most people eat more than one slider at a time.

Here's the disagreement: some food writers and restaurants are calling other sorts of miniature
hamburgers "sliders"; even though these tiny burgers are cooked and served in the same way as regular-sized hamburgers. And they are also calling other miniature bun-based sandwiches "sliders," even if they are made with seafood, chicken, or cheese rather than beef.

Some food writers and food critics are very, very cranky about these uses of the term sliders

So I'm going to back away slowly...and run off to Yard House, to order some sliders.

(By the way, if you are wondering why I don't go to a White Castle restaurant for an Original Slider - especially since White Castle is giving away 25,000 sliders today, on National Slider Day - the nearest one to me is a state away, in Las Vegas, Nevada.)

September 18 – National Cheeseburger Day

Posted on September 18, 2016

What could be more American than cheeseburgers?

It appears clear that the cheeseburger was indeed invented in the U.S., but exactly when and by whom, there are a lot of claims. All the claims date back to the 1920s and 1930s.

I personally like this story, because I grew up in Pasadena, California:

Once upon a time, a fellow named Lionel Sternberger was working in his dad's sandwich shop in (you guessed it) Pasadena, California. In 1926, he decided to try an experiment, and he dropped a slice of American cheese onto a sizzling hamburger patty.

Of course, he decided it was yum!, others agreed, and the rest is history!

Celebrate!

  • Some restaurants (and airlines!) are offering free or discounted / special deal cheeseburgers today.
  • There is even a competition to eat one of these Triple Triple Burgers:

Cheeseburgers come up once in a while in pop culture...

  • In-N-Out Burgers are so popular – especially their double cheeseburgers – that many communities celebrate when one opens there. Some really famous chefs like Julia Child, Hell's Kitchen's Gordon Ramsey, and chef-TV personality Anthony Bourdain love the place!

  • On the cartoon Popeye, the character Wimpy really LOVES hamburgers. It doesn't look like there is any cheese on his burgers, but the fast food chain called Wimpy, in his honor, certainly sells loads of cheeseburgers!

  • Gummi candies come in all shapes and colors. A fairly popular is the teeny-tiny cheeseburger!

This is going too far!

  •  Cheeseburger bedding? Yick!

  • Cheeseburger flavored Goldfish crackers? Yuck!

  • A cheeseburger bike bag? Umm...?
