August 19 - National Aviation Day in the U.S. of A.

This is an update on my post published August 19, 2010:


Celebrated on the birthday of Orville Wright, the first pilot of a successful airplane flight, National Aviation Day is a day meant to encourage people to visit aviation history sites (many small airports feature small but cool museums!), read about aviation, watch videos about aviation and early flight, and so forth.


Learn about lift and other forces of flight...



...make a paper airplane or paper helicopter...



...and do other experiments about flight.

June 2 - Civil Aviation Day in Azerbaijan

On June 2, 1938, Azerbaijan's first civil aviation organization was founded. That's why Azerbaijani aviation employees get a holiday today.

Civil Aviation....

This is one of Azerbaijan's military
airplanes.
You probably already know that "civil" means "non-military." Many nations got started with air travel through their military, during World War I or II. That doesn't necessarily mean that they immediately started air forces - remember that armies, navies, and other branches of the military generally use aircraft such as planes and helicopters, in addition to and separately from a nation's air force.

Non-military aviation - in other worlds, civil aviation - includes private planes and jets; commercial airlines; cargo flights and air mail; crop dusters; aircraft used by fire fighters, police forces, and other emergency services; news helicopters, and so on.

Here are just some of the professions involved with civil aviation:

pilots

air traffic controllers

flight attendants

mechanics and technicians
flight instructors 


safety managers

operations managers

manufacturing engineers


Worldwide, aviation is incredibly safe when compared to other means of transportation and even when compared to other sorts of daily activities.

Azerbaijan...

Azerbaijan is a pretty highly developed nation, with a strong economy and a human development index ranking the nation alongside Eastern European nations. Unfortunately, the ruling party has been accused of disrespecting some people's human rights; hopefully voters will be able to participate in fair elections and change that!

One of Azerbaijan most celebrated women is known as the "first female pilot in the east." (Not sure what "the east" encompasses?) Leyla Mammadbeyova was also a medal-winning scientist and Azerbaijan's first female pathologist.

November 22 – Rise of the Concorde and the Stealth Bomber

It's apparently not enough to fly through the air like a bird, anymore. These days,
we want faster flights, cheaper flights, more luxurious flights, flights to more places...and even sneakier flights!


On this date in 1977, British Airways began service to New York City on a supersonic jet with turbojet! “Supersonic” means “faster than sound,” but in this case it means a jet that can travel over twice the speed of sound!

The Concorde was a project created by French and British companies, and only Air France and British Airways purchased any of the airplanes. These planes offered much greater speed than most, plus luxury – but at a fairly large cost! The Concorde was pretty much for rich people.

On this date in 1988, the first B-2 Spirit stealth bomber was shared with the world. A stealth bomber is even more inaccessible for us average citizens, since it is a military vehicle designed to penetrate defenses that would detect most aircraft.

How does it do that?

The stealth bomber uses multi-spectral camouflage to confuse radar. It uses special anti-reflective paint so that it is hard to spot visually. It uses technologies to dampen the sound that would normally accompany a jet flying by, and it even has ways to confuse infrared sensors!

August 22 – Happy Birthday to an Aviation Pioneer

You may have heard about Wilbur and Orville Wright as the guys who invented powered flight (in other words, airplanes). But surely you know that lots of other people were fiddling around with their own designs and inventions for powered flight at the same time.

Today's famous birthday, Samuel Pierpont Langley, born on this date in 1834, seemed likely to succeed over the others—even over the Wright brothers. Langley was an American astronomer and physicist, and his unmanned tandem-wing plane flew 4,200 feet in late 1896. It was such a promising start that the U.S. War Department gave him $50,000 to develop a piloted airplane. The Smithsonian pitched in an additional $20,000.

Langley decided that it would be safest to fly over water, so he spent almost half of the start-up money building a houseboat and a catapult on the houseboat.

A cat-a-what?

A catapult is a contraption that is designed to hurl an object into the air. Langley's aircraft needed to go from a dead stop to 60 miles-per-hour, the speed necessary for flight, in just 70 feet. Since that would be impossible to do with the engines then available, Langley decided that a catapult would be needed to achieve the speed.

You probably know that most modern airplanes use long runways so that they can slowly achieve the speed needed for flight. Most runways are at least 6,000 feet long. 

But Langley's idea wasn't completely cuckoo; modern aircraft carriers sit on the ocean and use four catapults to launch airplanes into the air. And floating platforms for launching planes were used within ten years of the invention of the airplane.

behind, rather than two wings stacked.
Still, Langley did not succeed with his idea. His airplane, which he called an aerodrome, had a more powerful motor than that used by the Wright brothers, but both of his test flights ended in disaster. 

The first flight, on October 7, 1903, ended when the wing of the plane clipped the catapult and the aerodrome plunged into the river...A reporter wrote that the plane flew “like a handful of mortar.”  

The second flight, on December 8, 1903, ended when the rear wing and tail broke apart as it left the catapult. This time, the engineer / test pilot almost drowned in the Potomac River...but was (thankfully) rescued.

Some reporters and readers poked fun at the aerodromes' failures. A worker from the War Department concluded that Langley was still far from the goal of powered, controlled flight—and that it would take a team of experts and many more thousands of dollars to reach the goal.

Notice that the Wright brothers
built an airplane with "stacked
wings." This is called a biplane.
But then, just a few days later, on December 17, 1903, the Wright Brothers achieved the goal with an airplane that cost just $1,000 to build!
