June 2 – Rocky Road Day

Posted on June 2, 2015

It was 1929. The stock market had crashed in the U.S.. and much of the world was falling into an economic depression so deep it would later be called “The” Depression, or “The Great Depression.”

It looked as though there was a rocky, rocky road ahead!

And so William Dreyer named his most recent flavor of ice cream “rocky road.” He hoped it would make people smile – and with chocolate ice cream, mini-marshmallows, and chopped nuts – many people DID smile!

"Rocky Road" has since then become one of the most widely produced and eaten ice creams in the world  and the name has been applied to other marshmallowy, nutty, chocolatey treats as well!

I read that Australians commonly add jam to rocky road ice cream, and folks in the U.K. commonly add cherries and raisins.

To celebrate Rocky Road Day, you could eat rocky road pancakes...

...rocky road brownies or cupcakes...

...or of course rocky road ice cream!

Did you know...?

People are always inventing new and wonderful ice cream flavors...such as Churros con Leche, Lemon and Marion Berries, and Ooey Gooey Butter Cake. According to Wikipedia, there are also such terrible sounding (to me!) ice cream flavors as bacon ice cream, garlic ice cream, and crab ice cream.

Of course, the flavors in Jack Prelutsky's poem (and song) “Bleezer's Ice Cream Store” are fictional:

I am Ebenezer Bleezer,
I run BLEEZER’S ICE CREAM STORE,
