October 29 - National Hermit Day

A hermit is a person who lives alone. Like, not someone who lives alone in an apartment or house in a city, but rather someone who lives alone in a remote wilderness region.

Usually, we use the word hermit for someone who lives in solitude as a part of his or her religious practice. And that brings us to why October 29 is Hermit Day: 

October 29 is one of the traditional feast days of Saint Colman Mac Duagh, a man who lived alone in a cave, fasting a good deal and praying even more. This Irish saint was a hermit, in the most common sense of the word, and today is his feast day - hence, National Hermit Day!


Most of us never will - or want to - live in a cave for years and years, but we can still celebrate Hermit Day: we can consider using seclusion at least once in a while as a way to rest up from the normal busyness of our lives, the normal noise of our environments. Being alone - especially being alone in nature - could be important at least a few minutes a day, for some people, or for a few days a year, for others. 


Another way to get in tune with your inner hermit is to spend some time each day or each week with no TV, no social media, no smart phone, no computers or internet or video games. That break from electronic devices could be restful, even you aren't actually alone in the wilderness or even alone in the house.

Either way, enjoy the quiet!


October 28 - Happy Birthday, Landon Curt Noll

Born on this date in California, in 1960, Landon Curt Noll was able to make a Wikipedia-worthy contribution while still in high school!!

Noll was just 18 years old, and still enrolled in high school but also attending university classes, when he broke a record for discovering the largest known prime number. That makes him the youngest person ever to break that record.

Actually, Noll has held or co-held the largest-known-prime record three times. 


Lest you think that there is no use to prime numbers, and that Noll has wasted his life, he has also served his community in local politics, has made contributions to astronomy, and has furthered computer science. He has traveled to Antarctica multiple times to search for meteorites.

But let's get back to prime numbers...

I bet you remember that a prime number is a whole number greater than 1 whose ONLY factors are 1 and itself. In other words, 2 is prime because the only ways we can multiply two whole numbers and get the answer "2" are:

1 times 2 - and of course the reverse, 2 times 1

And that means that 2 has only two factors: 1 and itself.

Here is an example of a number that is NOT prime:

12 has several factors: 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, and 12 
1 times 12 = 12
2 times 6 = 12
3 times 4 = 12



The first few prime numbers are easy for all of us to figure out:

2, 3, 5, 7, 11...

But eventually we get to numbers we have to ponder a bit. Obviously, no even number other than 2 is prime, because it would have 2 as a factor, as well as 1 and itself. So, if you are ever asked if a number is a prime number, you can immediately answer "nope" if the number ends with 0, 2, 4, 6, or 8.

But many odd numbers have factors other than 1 and themselves. 

9 = 3 times 3
15 = 3 and 5
21 = 3 times 7
27 = 3 times 9


You can make a pretty good start at figuring out larger prime numbers by testing to see if the first few odd prime numbers can be evenly divided into that number. To test 31, for example, divide it by 3, 5, 7, and 11. Each of these divisions turn out to be include messy decimals - so we know that 31 is a prime. If you do the same for other odd numbers such as 33 and 35, you quickly find factors other than 1 and themselves.

Prime numbers get more rare as numbers get larger.

Here are a few large prime numbers:

8,191 
6,700,417 
20,988,936,657,440,586,486,151,264,256,610,222,593,863,921

That last one is really large! It has 44 digits! It was discovered in 1951 by Aime Ferrier, who used just a mechanical calculator. It is the largest prime ever found before the use of electronic computers (it was discovered in 1951, so there were electronic computers, at that point, but nobody had yet used them to find a prime number).

So, I was saying HOW LARGE Ferrier's prime is, with 44 digits, but Noll's first prime has 6,533 digits!!!!

I mean, yi-yi-yi!

Oh, and by the way, that crack I made above about prime numbers being useless - that's so, so, so, so, SO not true. 

Large prime numbers are used for computer cryptography. Creating codes that others cannot crack is not just a great way to stump enemies during a war, it's a great way of keeping your identity, money, and private information safe.

We use computer encryption every single day - buying things online, logging into your bank from your phone, etc. - and that means that we use and rely on prime numbers every day.

There are loads of other uses of prime numbers:

Primes can be used to encode two-dimensional pictured information. If you create a picture made up of black-or-white (on-or-off) squares in a grid that has a number of squares that is the product of two prime numbers, then another intelligent being (maybe an alien?) could possibly decode the information by arranging the picture only two ways, and seeing which way works as sensible picture. 

This idea was proposed by astronomers Frank Drake and Carl Sagan to communicate with possible alien intelligences, somewhere in the universe, and one message encoded in this way has been sent out into the cosmos!

Prime numbers can be used when creating electronic games and anything else that need random numbers.

Prime numbers are used in other ways in coding (that is, computer programming), such as error correcting code and hashes.

Prime numbers can be used to make animation more lifelike, by having, say, blades of grass bend at different times.

Prime numbers help in the development of machine tools, because it's important to avoid harmonics that will make too much vibration - and will make the tools wear out much faster. 

In the olden days of microwave ovens, no metal could be placed in the microwave - there'd be sparks and fires and what not! But nowadays there are some metal racks and turntables designed to be in microwave ovens - and that's because the metal is designed - using prime numbers - to be tuned to the cavity of the oven. As long as the rack is used properly and doesn't touch the walls or floor of the microwave, there will be no arc, no spark, no fire!

There are probably other real-world applications of prime numbers. But I think you can see my point - they're not just cool, they're crucial!




October 27 – Meteor!

A lot of debris from space falls onto the Earth.

And when I say "debris," I MOSTLY do not mean human trash / junk. Space junk like lost equipment, dead satellites, and upper stage boosters is definitely a concern, but most of it is circling the Earth; stuff that gets bumped out of orbit and falls on us often burns up in the atmosphere. Of course, some larger pieces do survive the friction of plunging through our protective layer of air, and NASA claims that an average of one catalogued piece of debris falls somewhere on Earth each day - and has for 50 years now!


But....so far there has been zero big-time problems for people down on Earth from the human-made debris. No significant property damage, no deaths or injuries.

But in space, there is a lot of debris that humans didn't make. I'm talking about all the dust, bits of rock, pebbles, larger chunks of rock and ice, and even boulders or small planetoids. All of this debris is either stuff left over from when the solar system formed or stuff created when comets break up or when rocky or icy bodies collide in space. 









 
And any of that dust-to-boulder-or-larger stuff that happens to hit the Earth becomes a meteor (a "shooting star") in our skies - lovely streaks of light that are exciting to see.

Rarely does a meteor make it all the way to the Earth's surface, but the larger bits that do are called meteorites. There are meteorites that are mostly made of iron, some that are mostly made of stone, and some that are a mix of stone and iron.





Now - how many meteors and meteorites fall on the Earth? An astounding 37,000 to 78,000 TONS of space debris rains down on Earth EVERY YEAR!

Most of that would come from dust-sized particles that of course burn up in the atmosphere. Phew!

Still, thousands of teeny bits of space rock make it all the way to the Earth's surface every year. Of course, most of them fall into the ocean (which makes up about 70% of the Earth's surface), and a lot of them fall onto empty sweeps of land like Antarctica, Siberia, the Sahara Desert, the forests of Canada and Africa and South America, and so on...

On this date in 1973, a 3-pound (1.4 kg) meteorite struck the ground in a city - in Cañon City, Colorado, to be specific - a very rare event. It landed on a garage, tearing a 6-inch hole in the garage roof, and leaving a 2-inch gash in the cement floor.


Notice that it didn't hit a car, or a pet, or a person.

In all of history, apparently, only 35 meteorites have ever hit a human-made structure in the United States. And only one person has ever been hit by a meteorite (at least that we know about): a 34-year-old woman napping in her home in Alabama was struck by a nine-pound meteorite. It gave her a big bruise but that was it! Wow!

This "only one person" I'm talking about is the only person known to have been hit by a meteorite anywhere in the world, throughout all of recorded history. (A man in India who was reported to have died in 2016 from an impact of what many presumed was a meteorite was apparently the victim of some sort of land-based explosion.)

However, being hit by a meteorite isn't the only thing to worry about. A really large meteorite can explode in the atmosphere and create a shock wave. In 2013 a 12-ton meteor entered the Earth's atmosphere and broke apart some 20 miles (30 km) above the Russian city of Chelyabinsk. About 1,000 to 1,200 people were injured in that extremely rare incident - but most of the injuries were cuts from glass broken by the shock wave.

I couldn't find any evidence that bits of the meteorite itself struck anyone. I read that 75% of the meteorite evaporated, but 9,000 to 13,000 pounds of meteorite (in varying sizes of chunks) fell onto Earth. The largest fragment was 1,400 pounds, and it broke through ice that was more than two feet thick to fall into a lake, leaving a 23-foot-wide hole in the ice!


But apparently no pets or people were struck by meteorite pieces - and nobody died from their shock-wave injuries. Phew!
