August 1 – Colorado's Statehood – Woot! Woot!

Posted on August 1, 2016

Being #38 to join the U.S. (on this date in 1876), out of 50 states, seems not so special.

Having a boring rectangular shape with borders entirely defined by lines of longitude and latitude seems not so special (although only Wyoming is in the same category!).

Being #8 in size and #22 in population seems not so special.

But TRUST ME, Colorado is very, very, very special!!!

From the ancient beauty of the Ancestral Puebloan cliff dwellings in Mesa Verde...

...to the modern metropolis of Denver...

From the lovely monochromatic grasslands of Eastern Colorado...

...to the stark contrast between pale sand dunes (America's tallest sand dunes!) against the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, at Great Sand Dunes National Park...

From the amazing erosion-sculpted red rock formations at the Garden of the Gods, in Colorado Springs...

...to the famed view from nearby Pike's Peak...

From the charming shops and restaurants in towns such as Crested Butte...

...to the soaring Rockies Mountains (and of course ski resorts, such as Mount Crested Butte)...

From the depths of the Black Canyon of the Gunnison...

...to the wind-swept alpine beauty of the continental divide in Rocky Mountain National Park...

From the twists and turns (and scary cliffs) of the Million Dollar Highway from Ouray to Silverton...

...to the snowy trails for snowshoers and cross country skiers...

From the stinky but fun hot springs at Pagosa Springs...

...to the cool waters of Maroon Lake...

Colorado is fascinating, historic, and breathtakingly gorgeous!
