August 13 – Independence Day in the Central African Republic

Posted on August 13, 2016

Today I'm going to discuss the Central African Republic. And I'm going to ask, when you've got uranium, crude oil, gold, diamonds, lumber, land that can be farmed, and plenty of hydropower (power created by water via waterwheels, dams, and so on)...with all of that, how you stay one of the ten poorest nations in the world?

Having dictators, wars, coups, and “ethnic cleansing” sure doesn't help! Of course, the legacy of being colonized and exploited by foreign powers doesn't help, either. A couple of years ago the Human Development Index ranked the Central African Republic #187 out of 188 countries in human development (life expectancy, education, and income per person).

So...almost dead last!

On this date in 1960, the Central African Republic gained its independence from France.

Enough with the depressing stuff. Let's move on to the beauties of the Central African Republic:

Like other nations, CAR has its natural beauties...
And how humans use and fit into the natural world
can be beautiful...

The wildlife is amazing!

I love the Olympic Games, and I think it's beautiful that even a poor
nation like CAR has sent six athletes to Rio.

And of course, there are the people...
