April 15 – Declaration of Melaka as a Historical City

Posted on April 15, 2017

The United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) tries to do two important things:

1. Build a lasting peace by promoting education and educational exchange, by promoting scientific cooperation, and by promoting
intercultural understanding.

2. Protect and maintain important historical and cultural sites as sources of understanding and inspiration.

To that end, one of the things that UNESCO does is to designate World Heritage Sites. In 2008, UNESCO declared Melaka, Malaysia, as one of those precious World Heritage Sites; today's holiday celebrates that designation.

Melaka (sometimes spelled Malacca) used to be one of the most important trading ports in Southeast Asia. Because of this, the town shows
signs of multi-cultural influences in its architecture and traditions. Today and all week Melaka celebrates its melting-pot heritage with special foods and shows and cultural exhibits.
