April 19 – Record Store Day

Posted on April 19, 2014

This day urges us to remember that music is available other places than iTunes Store and WalMart! There are, still, such places as record stores!

And an indie record store near you might be hosting a special event today!

Some record stores get really crowded
on RSD!
The main special event happening at record stores today is the release of vinyl albums or single records – music that will be available in record stores only! Bands such as Oasis and Green Day, solo artists such as Dolly Parton and Steve Earle (which is my brother's name, but this guy is NOT my brother), old now-defunct bands such as Nirvana and the Ramones—all are releasing records (again, at record stores only) today!
Here is an example of a record that is being
released today - something that has never
before been commercially available in the U.S.

There are tons of resources on the Record Store Day website—from RSD shirts you can buy to lists of bands putting out records to celebrate the day, from quotes about the importance of record stores to videos about the holiday. Check it out!

Here's one quick quote I like:

Independent record stores rule. They are the last refuge for those who are looking for music that's outside of the box or outside of this decade.” - Chris Faller, The Hush Sound

Have you ever wondered how vinyl records are made? There are a lot of steps! Watch Part 1 and Part 2 of this YouTube video.
