A lot of gorgeous grandmas don't know that they are gorgeous.
Take
advantage of this day to tell your grandmas that they are...or,
better yet, to show them! I'm thinking visits and hugs, phone
calls and compliments, flowers and cards and photos, maybe even
shopping trips or spa visits!
My
husband and I just got back from a road trip, and one of the
interesting places we visited was Mammoth Site in Hot Springs, South
Dakota. Thousands and thousands of years ago, a sinkhole formed and
filled up with warm water; plants grew around this steep-sided pool
even in the winter, because of the warm water, and many different Ice
Age animals were tempted by the warmth, food, and water—and fell
into the sinkhole trap. Of course, the animals who drowned were
buried in dirt and sediments; now scientists are excavating this
ancient sinkhole.
I know you are wondering what the heck all of this has to do with grandmas. Well, I was so surprised that our guide told us that, in this excavation, the largest fossil collection of mammoths in the world, EVERY ONE of the 61 skeletons was male. Apparently mammoths (like modern elephants) had matriarchal societies in which adult males left the herds to wander on their own or in bachelor herds. It is likely that it was the loner males who were the biggest risk takers, and were therefore the ones who ended up trapped in that sinkhole, but scientists believe that the older females in the herd (yes, I'm talking about the grandmas) knew from experience to avoid the sinkhole and were able to warn others in the herd to stay away. So...not a single female (apparently) ended up entrapped.

My
point is, grandmas and grandpas have lived a long time and have
learned a lot of things along the way. Take advantage of the day to
soak up a bit of their hard-won wisdom!
Speaking of gorgeous grandmas, the lovely lady on the left is my own kids' gorgeous grandma. I wish we could all look that good at age 81(her age at the time of the photo, a couple of years ago)! |
