October 7 - Born to Dance

Posted October 7, 2018

Today is the birthday of "the mother of Dutch dance."

Mascha ter Weeme, who was born in Amsterdam on this date in 1902, was one of the people who brought ballet to big cities and small towns in the Netherlands. She set up the Ballet of the Low Countries, which later joined the Ballet of the Dutch Opera to become the Amsterdam Ballet. When it later joined yet another company to become the Dutch National Ballet, ter Weeme continued as co-director for a short while.

Ter Weeme was first a dancer and later an artistic director and dance company leader. She also taught dance.

To celebrate ter Weeme, enjoy a peek at current Dutch ballet. By the way, as you can see from this short video, dance is very international. Only one of the young dancers shown here in the Dutch ballet junior company is Dutch - and the others are from all over!
