May 5 – Coronation Day in Thailand

This national holiday involves time off work and school for many every year, even though coronations themselves are very rare. One happened last year, however, when  Crown Prince Vajiralongkorn ascended to the throne as king. The three-day ritual / celebration included a procession, audiences with important citizens and foreign leaders, and of course the actual crowning ceremony.

It's lucky that the ceremony took place - after months of preparation and 31 million dollars spent! - in 2019 rather than 2020. I doubt that it would have been able to occur this year, given the global pandemic.
