October 2 - Kids' Music Day

Posted October 2, 2020

(First Friday of October)

What makes music "kids' music"?

For sure, people of all ages can enjoy most music. And bands that are considered "rock" or "folk" or some other genre, rather than "kids' music," sometimes make songs that seem especially kid-friendly. For example, Yellow Submarine and Octopus's Garden were recorded by a little band you may have heard of: the Beatles.

But some songs deal with topics - and use language - that aren't all that interesting or appropriate for kids. And some artists and composers position themselves as creating and performing music especially for children. Raffi and The Kerplunks, Peter Alsop and Secret Agent 23 Skidoo, Disney soundtracks and "cleaned up" versions of Jimmy Buffett songs are some examples of kids' music.

There are lots of resources for kids' music online, such as The Children's Music Network.

Enjoy some great music today!
