July 13 - Happy Birthday, Erno Rubik

This is an update of my post published on July 13, 2011:

You've heard of Rubik, right? Or...at least his cube?

Erno Rubik was born in Hungary during World War II. His dad was a flight engineer and his mom a poet, and Rubik combined the technical expertise of an engineer with the artistic sense of a poet to become an architect and sculptor. He also became the editor of a game-and-puzzle journal and a university professor in applied arts, and he has designed games, furniture, puzzles, and video games.

Released in 1980, Rubik's Cube became a best-seller. There have been a bunch of “sequels” and spinoff toys, and even a TV show; the cube earned a place as a permanent exhibit in New York City's Museum of Modern Art, and it entered the Oxford English Dictionary in just two years. It is widely acknowledged as the world's top-selling puzzle game and, for a while, was the world's most asked-for plaything.

Check out Rubik's “Cube Tube”!

There have been Rubik's Cube speed competitions and world champions - and even "solve it while blindfolded" contests.
