July 7 – Saba Saba Day in Tanzania

Posted on July 7, 2017

"Saba" means seven in Swahili.

So today's holiday means "Seven Seven." Which is of course today's date!

The reason for the holiday is commemorating the 1954 founding of the political party, the Tanganyika African National Union, which worked for the nation's independence.

Also, the Dar es Salaam International Trade Fair takes place on this day!

Learn more numbers in Swahili here.

There are lots of other Swahili resources available for free, like Bino and Fino and Zippy the Zebra.

Tanzania is amazing! From Mount Kilamanjaro, which is the highest mountain in Africa...

...to the Olduvai Gorge, which is one of the most important anthropological sites in the world, where scientists have discovered ancient hominin fossils...

...and from the Serengeti National Park, famous for massive migrations of wildebeest and zebra...

...to the House of Wonders, which was built as a palace but now serves as a museum...

...some of the most famous African sights await visitors to Tanzania.
