Did you know?
The first recorded St. Patrick's Day parade in the world was held in what is now the United States of America—but, when that first parade was held, it was just the British colonies. It was on March 17, 1762, in New York City, and Irish soldiers serving in the British army organized it. I guess a lot of the early Irish settlers were indentured servants, and they eagerly participated in the parade.
Notice that the first St. Patty's parade was not in Ireland!
Today the New York City St. Patrick's Day parade counts as the world's oldest civilian (non-military) parade—and, with 150,000 participants, it's the largest parade in the U.S.!
