June 23 - Luxembourg's National Day

Posted on June 23, 2014
It's the smallest country in Europe by population - about half a million people.

It's one of the smallest countries in the world by area - less than 1,000 square miles!

And it is one of the top two countries in wealth "per capita" (per person) in the world, too!

And although it has several dates on which this tiny nation COULD celebrate its independence - like its independence from the French Empire on June 9, 1815 - Luxembourg celebrates its national day today, on the birthday of its Grand Duchess Charlotte.

I read that most Luxembourgers are tri-lingual. I'm not surprised, since apparently most of them grow up speaking Luxembourgish from birth on, but school is taught in German, the TV and radio broadcasts are in German, and official business is conducted in French.

I was really surprised to read that more tourists visit Luxembourg every year (about one million) than actually live there!

I also read that almost 40% of the population is made up of immigrants. Wow! That's close to half! About one third of the immigrants are from - wait for it... - Portugal! Are you surprised? I sure am...
