June 22 - Voting Age Lowered

Posted on June 22, 2021

This is an update of my post published June 22, 2010:

On this day in 1970, President Richard Nixon signed a bill that lowered the voting age from 21 to 18. This bill was passed because, as the nation struggled through the unpopular Vietnamese War, people said that, if 18, 19, and 20 year olds were old enough to die for their country, they were also old enough to participate in the elections that would help set policy, including foreign policy.

Earlier in the year, I discussed some people's ideas about lowering the voting age even lower. If you haven't already read it, you might like to take a peek and see if you agree.

There is now a push to lower the voting age to 16.

Some people argue that 16- and 17-year olds might not have
enough knowledge to vote responsibly.

But people who think a vaccine turns people magnetic
are allowed to vote, and people who think that contrails
(condensation or vapor trails produced by aircraft engine
exhaust) are actually mind-control chemtrails sprayed
on us by our government - they, too, are allowed to vote.

So...."knowledge" isn't a pre-requisite for voting - and even if
it were, I would assume that 16 year olds, as a group, would
compare just fine to adults.
