Happy Birthday, Will Rogers

Will Rogers was a Cherokee American cowboy and performer who lived from 1879 to 1935. He was famous for standing on a stage, making humorous observations on politics and life while chewing gum and doing rope tricks. He appeared on vaudeville, radio, and movies and became very popular.

He was sort of the Jon Stewart of his time.

Here's a sample of some of his humor:

“There's no trick to being a humorist when you have the whole government working for you.”

“I belong to no organized [political] party. I am a Democrat.”

“An ignorant person is one who doesn't know what you have just found out.”

“Even if you're on the right track, you'll get run over if you just sit there.”

Both of Will Rogers' parents were part Cherokee. He himself was 9/32nds Cherokee! Is that closer to one-fourth or one-half?

Laughter is a wonderful thing. As Will Rogers himself said, "We are all here for a spell; get all the good laughs you can." He also pointed out that "an onion can make people cry, but there has never been a vegetable invented to make them laugh."

So do some fun and funny stuff today, and be sure to laugh!

What's in a name?
Will Rogers had a very ordinary-sounding name, but his FULL name was William Penn Adair Rogers. He was born on Dog Iron Ranch, near Oologah in Indian Territory, and he died in a plane crash near Barrow, Alaska. So those are some pretty interesting names, huh?
