January 4 – Trivia Day

Posted on January 4, 2017

In some ways, I'm not a huge fan of trivia. After all, aren't important concepts and ideas and facts way more important than...trivia?

Trivia is defined as details or pieces of information of little importance or value!

But it can be fun to play a trivia game, and sometimes I like reading lists of trivia, and so I know that trivia can be fun.

Plus, what is trivia for one person may be important to another.

So, let's do this!

Here is a great source of truly funny and/or interesting bits of trivia. (At least, I think so!)

Here are some cool bits of trivia about the planets:

  • The highest mountains of Venus are covered with a frost of metals that condense from the metal-mist in the atmosphere!

  • A day on Mercury lasts 176 Earth days.

  • Even though Jupiter is HUGE (almost 1,300 Earths would fit inside it!), it turns on its axis really fast. That means it has the shortest day in the solar system -- just about 10 Earth hours long.

  • Pieces of Mars have been found on Earth (we can tell when we find tiny traces of Martian air inside of meteorites).

  • Uranus turns the opposite direction of all the rest of the planets.

  • If you had a large enough bathtub full of water, Saturn would float in it!

And here is some trivia about trivia!

  • The word trivia comes from a Latin word that means a place where three roads meet. It's possible that the meaning came from the fact that such a crossroads can be a good place to exchange info.

  • Trivial Pursuits, the board game, is one of the most famous games in the world; it has sold 100 million copies in just 35 years.
  • Trivia Pursuits has been sold in 26 countries in at least 17 different languages.
  • Who Wants to be a Millionaire (U.S. version) has given top prizes to 12 people, so far.
  • Popular game show Jeopardy has the potential for someone who is super quick with the buzzer, always right, and really bold by risking his or her winnings on the Final Jeopardy question to win about half a million dollars. However, the top prize winner in one game (three rounds) of Jeopardy is a mere $77,000.
The record holder for winnings in Jeopardy,
Ken Jennings, won a 2.5 million dollars --
but it took him 74 wins to do it!
