September 18 - World Goat Day? Maybe?

Posted on September 18, 2018

There is a day to celebrate almost everything, so I don't see why there shouldn't be an annual World Goat Day.

Last year World Goat Day was celebrated on September 18, so I'm just going to assume that today we're doing it again!

Let's start with three "Did you know...?" facts that I did NOT know:

Did you know...?

  • Domesticated goats may look different, but they are all the same species, Capra aegagrus hircus. Like dogs who look really, really different depending on their breed, there are lots of breeds of domesticated goats.

  • Goats are one of the oldest domesticated animals; evidence tells us that they have been domesticated more than 8,500 years. Goats have been used for milk, meat, fur, and skins all over the world.

  • Currently there are almost a billion domesticated goats living scattered across the world.

Switzerland
Burkina Faso
India
Mongolia
United States

Morocco
Peru

Somalia

A picture paints a thousand words:

Here are a few examples of different breeds of goats:

And here are a few wild Capra species that are related to domesticated goats:

Another wild animal with the word "goat" in its name is from a different genus, Oreamnos:

Rocky Mountain goat
