April 17 – Syria's Independence Day

Syria. Right now, we cannot think about celebrating Syria's independence from France (the last French soldiers left on this date in 1946) - because our minds are full of the Syrian civil war, the horrifying and needless deaths, the terrible destruction, and all of the refugees. We are angry and sad - and we cannot celebrate.

 Lest we forget, the country had - and hopefully still has some, at least - gorgeous buildings and ancient ruins.





It has its share of natural beauty. 

Its people are varied and as beautiful as people can be.
